Thank you. This all makes sense. I have a new purge valve ready to install. This seems quite easy and quick to replace. I replaced the fuel cap, removed code and after first fill up the same condition returned. I notice on my Elantra rust is forming under the fuel fill area and blistering through the body over the wheel well. Possibly if the vent is exposed to that same condion it may be rusted also. I will post what I find. I am going to go one step at a time so I can better detrmine the cayse of the problem. Thank for your time L Boel

Most likely is a bad EVAP purge valve. But check below list.
This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle'spo441 2002 Hyundai, engine hard starting after fil - icon1.png fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

EVAP emission canister purge is controlled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.

Likely, no symptoms will be discernible to the driver, other than the illuminated Check Engine Light.
Causes

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • Bad vacuum switch
  • Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
  • Open in PCM purge command circuit
  • Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Faulty purge solenoid
  • Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
  • Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
  • Bad PCM
Possible Solutions

With a P0441 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

  • Replace Leak Detection Pump / LDP
  • Repair damaged EVAP lines or canister
  • Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
  • Repair open in PCM purge command circuit
  • Replace purge Solenoid
  • Replace vacuum switch
  • Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or solenoid
  • Repair resistance in purge connector
  • Replace PCM

SOURCE: 2001 hyundai santa fe hard to start engine after filling gas tank

not sure it should happen that fast but it may.... buy yourself a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze and put them in the gas tank... sounds like you have a lil water problem ... this stuff is basically alcohol (not the kind you drink) and it will suck up the water.

What would cause my Hyundai Santa Fe to start hard every time I put fuel in the tank? It doesn't mater if I just put a couple of gallons in or fill it up.

First sign of pump going bad when it is being filled fuel swirls the dirt around in the tank and when you go to start it it is hard. after the pump is running it runs fine til the next time.

Start problem after filling gas tank

Interesting,
is the check engine light on, and have you checked the computer for trouble codes ?
Sounds like the idle air control valve is sticking but that would not have any effect with the gas tank.

My 1998 Hyundai Elantra will not start after running out of gas. When I put gas in it ,it would crank but it took a long time to start. I drove it 3 miles and it shut off. I cranked it and cranked it,but it...

Don't let the car run out of gas. Fill the tank and run until the tank is half empty. Again fill the tank.
By driving until you run out of gas, you are letting sediments/dirt collected in the bottom of the tank to enter the engine. Rather they will block the fuel filter. Then gas will not reach the engine.
Clean the gas filter and your car will run fine.
The same advice again. Don't drive until the tank becomes empty.

I have a hard time starting my 04 Santa Fe after i fill up

it was running then you removed the gas cap to fill ( extremely dangerous practice with car running)
that indicates that there is a problem with the EVAP system.
run the fault codes ( what the dealers should have done first ) and check for the EVAP codes , purge vent or solenoid problems

Car won't start after filling up the gas tank.

Just helped a friend fix this exact same issue on his 2004 hyundai santa fe. Replaced the purge control valve - a $39 part, even from the dealer. Had to get our hands dirty, but it took literally one single hour to replace the part. Filled it up immediately afterward and no more starting problems. Part is located directly behind the manifold - top, rear of the engine compartment - just between the engine

Fill up with gas

i had the same problem, you have to change the perge control valve, its on the back of the engine below where the plastic intake pipe meets the metal intake manifold on the back side of the engine between the engine block and the firewall, on the underside of your car hood you will see a vacume system diagram, it will illistrate where the valve is, it should cost about 30 bucks or so at a hyundai dealership
