Check engine light on these year fords is always an emissions problem...check for a vacuum leak, you can also check your codes on an OBD 1 meter to narrow down other causes...but is usually either a vacuum leak or a dirty/malfunctioning EGR valve.

Sounds like either a vacuum leak (check the bottom of the "tomatoe juice can" for starters) or a bad or plugged egr valve or egr solenoid.
check engine lite refers to emissions probs only...most likely egr or vac leak. Had the same prob on my 95 5.0 f150...needed new can and egr valve.

If it's only loosing power when on uphill, it could be possible you have a vacuum leak somewhere, or your exhaust gas recirculating valve (EGR) is either dirty, or has a hole in the membrane...I suspect a vacuum leak somewhere.

Have you replaced the timing belt? if not i would highly recommend doing so. these cars need to have the timing belt replaced before it breaks otherwise it can and will cause major engine damage.

Why does my van have a burning smell when I go up hills?

You may have a minor oil leak and not see any dripping on the ground. The van is under load going up hills and will run slightly hotter. If there is oil leaking in or around the exhaust manifold it will give a burning smell.

94 Cadillac Eldorado overheating uphill

This actually sounds like your motor is not the problem it sounds as
thougth your transmission is in need of work. if you have flushed your
system also may look at your oil pump system as the change in pitch of the road to climb hills may infact be pulling sludge against the sump
tube screen and plugging the oil pump. these are the only two reasons I can see for this to happen if system only dose this when climbing a hill
.

I had a similiar problem on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Conversion Van. It ended up being a partial collapse of the catalytic converter which didn't allow adequate exhaust. The problem only showed itself because I could not get over 55 mph going up a small hill.
