The neautral safety switch is out of adjustmen loose or broken it is located under the vehicle bolted on the side of the transmission where the linkage goes in to the ****** if you have a basic knowledge with tools it is a easy repair and the neatural safety swich or TRS transmission range switch can be bought at most auto parts stores

SOURCE: 2001 Mercury Mountaineer won't start

Have a load test done on the battery. If it checks out good, take a voltmeter to the battery and have an assistant rotate the engine. If you see more than a 2 volt drop when the car is being started, the starter is heading south.

SOURCE: My 2003 Mercury Mountaineer Gear Shift is stuck.

See if u have brake lights. This is what energizes the shifter solenoid. There are 2 fuses u can check both are in the under dash fuse panel. Fuse 23 (15amp) and fuse 26 (7.5amp).
To get it out of park turn igntion switch on stopping just short of engerizing the electronics then u should be able to get it out of park and into neutral.

SOURCE: 2003 mercury mountaineer wont shift out of park

There is suppose to be a lockout on the gearshift. You always need to hit the brake pedal while moving the gearshift from P to D.
If this is a 4 wheel drive unit, make sure you are not in 4 low. You want to be in 2 wheel or plain 4wheel high.

Button on the gear shift does not press into move gear shift on mountaineer

Check to see if brake lights are working when you step on pedal...if not you may have a bad brake lamp switch on the pedal shaft.if the shifter interlock doesn't see power out of the switch it won't allow you to shift out of park. It's a safety system to prevent anyone from shifting into gear when they might be pressing gas pedal. If you're stuck, sometimes you can turn key on to just before dash lights come on, put vehicle in neutral and start and shift, but be careful because you may not have brake lights and could cause an accident or possibly get pulled over.

2005 Mountaineer 2 wheel drive, 6 cyl hard to shift when parked on incline or decline and doesnt feel like shifting into overdrive. Sometimes jump a few inches when put into reverse. Any thoughts.

Yes when you park on an incline you should always put your emergency brake on before shifting to park. Then whenyou are ready to move again put you car in gear before disengaging the emergency brake. this will remove the stress from the transmission.

Of course the first thing to do is to check the transmission fluid level. Next have car scanned for codes, if there is a speed sensor malfunctioning, the transmission would go into limp mode. In limp mode, only reverse and second gear work. Many auto parts stores will scan your car for free. I hope this helps.

I'm sorry to say that you will either have to rebuild the transmission or replace it. All transmissions will start out in 1st. gear when put in drive. Oddly enough this is also the same gear that is used when you are in reverse. please let me know if you need help with anything else.
