Question about 1997 Mercury Mountaineer
We have replaced the starter, the battery is les than 6 months old, and the battery cables are clean and free of corosion.
The neautral safety switch is out of adjustmen loose or broken it is located under the vehicle bolted on the side of the transmission where the linkage goes in to the ****** if you have a basic knowledge with tools it is a easy repair and the neatural safety swich or TRS transmission range switch can be bought at most auto parts stores

Have a load test done on the battery. If it checks out good, take a voltmeter to the battery and have an assistant rotate the engine. If you see more than a 2 volt drop when the car is being started, the starter is heading south.

See if u have brake lights. This is what energizes the shifter solenoid. There are 2 fuses u can check both are in the under dash fuse panel. Fuse 23 (15amp) and fuse 26 (7.5amp).
To get it out of park turn igntion switch on stopping just short of engerizing the electronics then u should be able to get it out of park and into neutral.

THERE IS A SENSOR ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THAT RELEASES THE THE SHIFTER.THERE A 3 COMPONENTS INVOLVED.U CAN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL BEFORE U START THE CAR.THEN WIL SHIFT.

There is suppose to be a lockout on the gearshift. You always need to hit the brake pedal while moving the gearshift from P to D.
If this is a 4 wheel drive unit, make sure you are not in 4 low. You want to be in 2 wheel or plain 4wheel high.
