How do I kno my clutch went out 1-3 are fine 4-5 gear have no power

Mostly these problems are caused by the pressure plate but how does your clutch feel is it lump or normal the way you are used to it

    I was pulling a tractor and I started to get stuck so I put my foot back on the clutch and was lightly let it out as I was on the gas as I was doing that there was smoke coming out from the right front by my tire and when I drove my jimmy after when I go to let the clutch out it dosnt kick like it use too also my clutch is a hydro clutch

    ok i get you but the smoke was indicating that you nare burning your clutch so now what you must do is to change your clutch kit then you will get your gears back

If the gears grind when you try to put the shifter into gear, chances are you've got a bad slave cylinder, or master clutch cylinder.

2003 Porsche Carrera 4 will not go into any gear with motor running. With the engine off I can shift through the gears just fine. It feels like the clutch is not fully disengaged.

You can test the clutch hypothesis. Carefully put the car in gear for a safe direction, then depress the clutch and turn over the engine. If the car lurches, then the clutch is not working. In this case, check the linkage to the clutch, or if yours is hydraulic, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If the cylinder is low, then don't stop by just filling it, you want to find out where the fluid went. Look for leaks - especially around the clutch slave cylinder.
If on the other hand your engine it starts with the transmission in gear and the clutch down without lurching, then try letting the clutch out slowly. With any luck you have it running and in gear. See what happens next. Good Luck!

Check the cable under the gear lever. Look for broken pin or missing pin joining the lever to the cable

not a clutch problem as 1st is the hardest on a clutch sounds like internal failure in the transmission gearing and sincros

O.k firsty thank you 4 your time ..its a 1989 bronco 11 2wd 2.9 L 5 speed manual trans. {with transfer case] .... o,k, when i started the engine with the clutch in , every thing was fine. i put it in 1 st....

You are in trouble, expect a visit from the police soon. Actually the thing is over 20 years old and you need to do the clutch, replace all the parts and resurface the flywheel. Every part on the car will fail with age and use, most likely someone did this 10 years ago or so and now it is due again. As you can most likely buy a late 90s Explorer for the same amount you are about to spend on a clutch, you may want to just upgrade vehicles a decade, however a late 90s one will be ready for a clutch itself so try and find one which has already had that done.

Clutch or pressure plate bad

1. If it is maintaining a gear when you try to start it in gear = Pressure Plate is fine. Don't do this too much as it can blow the gear in the starter. Just do it momentarily to test it. If you start it in gear and the motor fails to turn you can be reassured your clutch is fine if you had no slipping issues before.
2. If pedal went down and stays down = Check fluid levels for the clutch master. This has a return spring in the master so it should return on its own even if it has sprung a leak.
3. If fluid level is up = Linkage has possibly come off or actuator has come off at the fulcrum in the bell housing.

If this has come apart at the actuator arm this may or may not be accessible with the transmission installed for inspection. Look for an exploded view of this assembly and it will give you a better idea of what is happening. If it has come lose at the actuator fulcrum arm the transmission will have to be removed to service the failed part. The actuator arm or failed master is consistent with your hard shifting issues prior to failure.

if it wont drive how do you kno its engaging if it is in gear and you arent pushing in the clutch it should move forward if it doesnt move then you will have to replace the clutch

Changing gears very stiff

try 1 0f these solutions giving the cars age and not much discription.
1 check the level of your gear box oil

2 change the gear box oil or if automatic change the fluid for the transmision.( since you say changeing gears i take it that it's manual gear box.

3 if manual the gears need over hauled giving the age of your car.

4 your clutch cable needs adjusted due ware on the clutch or if hydraulic the clutch system needs bleed with new fluid.

the acuating cylinder for the clutch needs to be replaced. this explains why you ahve no resistance when you deprress the clutch peddle. when adjusted right you should have no more than 1-1 1/2 inches of free play in the clutch peddle. and since the car will be in gear with out the clutch being pressed tells me that the clutch itself is good. please rate this
