Dodge 2500 RAM 4x4 Tranny problems

I have a 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 4x4. When I shift the automatic into drive or reverse it does not move. At a stop it just won't move. After some head banging it would slowly move forward. I had it serviced with new fluid and filter before problem and mechanic said the bands were good and the old filter looked fine. I can start up the truck, but it won't move forward or back. The tranny overheated heated the day I had it toed home which is the last day I drove it. If i do shift into a gear, it seems it just won't engage in the gear.

my son-in-law drove my 1999 Ram 1500,300 miles from home today.than i get a call that the transmission is slipping.he says when you put it in drive the tran is slipping but you can put it in park and than back to drive and it will start pulling, but if you ever stop it will start slipping again, and when it is pulling it doesnt went to shift into another gear or if it does it shifts real hard.he had someone that works at a transmission shop come by,and they said the converter clutch has went out and would need a rebuild.does anyone know if this is true or could it be a different problem.the truck is 300 miles from here so im hopeing it just needs a simple part replaced and i dont have to pay to have it towed.thanks
