SOURCE: no spark

If the check engine light is on, rent a scanner, read out any codes and pursue to repairs.The Haynes service manual that I have (which describes the 3.1 liter engine) shows the position sensor as being in about the middle of the rear of the block. Is this correct? What sort of ignition does the engine have? If it is a HEI type distributor, they have a habit of shorting the rotor out--look for a white spot underneath the hole where the shaft goes which shows that it was arcing through. If you have a coil block type ignition, then it is driven by the engine computer which could have failed in some way. A computer scan should reveal that. Good luck!

There are six VIN numbers of engines for the 1991 Buick Lesabre, with a 3.8 Liter engine.

1.Vin B
2.Vin 3
3.Vin C
4.Vin 1
5.Vin L
6.Vin K

All have the Firing Order of 1-6-5-4-3-2

For Vin B and 3:
Hood open, looking at the engine from the front of the car. The coil pack is behind the engine, close to the firewall. (Under the windshield)
The crankshaft pulley is down on the left side.

Spark plug numbering, for the spark plugs close to the radiator side.
From Left; (Front of engine), going Right-> 1-3-5
Spark plug numbering, for spark plugs on the backside of the engine.
From Left going Right-> 2-4-6

The distributorless coil pack sits on the backside of the engine, close to the firewall.
Numbering of where to put the spark plug wires;
There are three spark plug towers close to the engine. From Left to Right -> 3-5-7
There are three spark plug towers far from the engine. From Left to Right-> 6-4-2

For Vin C, 1, L and K:

Hood open, facing the car.
The Front of the engine faces to the Right. The crankshaft pulley is down, and to the Right.

Spark plugs close to the radiator;
From Left to Right-> 6-4-2

I need to know the timing sequence for a 1998 Mercury Mystique 2 liter

ignition timing or valve timing?

ignition timing not setable.

info:
The ignition system consists of an ignition coil, spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The crankshaft position sensor signal is the basis for ignition timing calculations. The alternating voltage signal from the crankshaft position sensor is digitized by the powertrain control module. This digitized signal is then used to position the closing time of the primary circuit of the ignition coil.
Ignition angle is determined by the powertrain control module in response to engine operating conditions. Once ignition angle has been determined, the powertrain control module interrupts the current to the primary circuit of the ignition coil thus triggering the ignition spark which is supplied to the cylinders through the spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The ignition coils are triggered by the powertrain control module in pairs (cylinders 1 and 4 and cylinders 3 and 2) sending one ignition spark to the firing cylinder and one ignition spark to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke. This make sures that any unburnt fuel residues remaining in the cylinder on the exhaust stroke are re - ignited to provide cleaner exhaust emissions.

autozone will check your ignition module free if you bring it in. If it's a 3.1, you may need the coil under the distributor cap too.
