1998 ford expedition 4x4 not working transfercase works

1998 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with 4WD. I have the same problem. Indicator light works and you can hear the transfer engage in the LOW range. Also, my AC doesn't work :-)

It snowed, it iced, my truck was 4 tons of useless metal.

I looked around - have spent hours online - and a few in the garage. One guy suggested there was a valve the mechanic could replace. Another suggested vacuum issues. The battery is now removed and several things are torn apart and all I've found is this...

There are 3 tubes that plug into the front transaxle??? where the drive shaft from the rear plugs into the front axle. One of these is large and black and goes up and ends in a respirator plug (I assume to get air above water when fjording a stream).

The other 2 tubes are orange and black in a flexible jacket that go up and connect to another set of tubes very near the windshield wiper fluid reservoir. These tubes (blue and pink now) connect into some junctions at the firewall near the passenger side.

THESE ARE BROKEN. In addition, I found that a white tube - which connects into the same junction is broken. I have no idea what these do - but they need to be fixed I'm sure. Hopefully the white one drives the AC...

You can see the junctions fairly easily if you raise the hood and look next to the firewall on the passenger side. The inline splice next to the fluid reservoir is harder to see without climbing on top or getting underneath - but you can tell they are situated to take a lot of abuse so yours may be snapped as well.

I'll let you know if I find anything tomorrow... Let me know what you come up with.

Today I fixed the vacuum lines to the front differential (nee transaxle). I had trouble finding parts in the local auto store that would do the trick - but I got something cobbled together. Based on my experience, I can go back to the store and get the right parts for a proper fit.

As of now, 4WD will engage but will not disengage - clearly one of the connections is still poor, or I accidentally switched the ports, or the vacuum shift motor (attached to the front differential) is shot (obviously from abuse).

As near as I can tell, once I switch into 4WD-HI, it will not shut off. 4WD-LO will engage and disengage properly. If I turn the car off for a while, a couple of times 4WD has disengaged. Hmmm...

I have a 1998 Ford Expedition and I can't get the 4 X 4 high to engage. The other day I got caught in the snow and I couldn't get the truck to go into 4 X 4 high or AWD however it would go into 4 X 4 low....

The 4x4 systems on those are mostly electical. I've had many fords have problems with the 4x4 electic motor mounted on the transfer case. In most cases if you tap on the transfer case motor when trying to engage 4x4 it will start to work. This is most likely if 4x4 is seldom used.
