Open Question

Where is the ambient temperature sensor located on a 2006 Nissan Micra

The temperature on the computer shows 16 deg C, and has shown this for the past few days. The actual temp is around 29! Where do I locate the sensor to check whether it is faulty?

bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that #1 cylinder is on , and sensor 2 refers to downstream , after the catalytic converter. , this link shows bank 1 on a 2001 nissan maxima V6 being on the firewall side . if you had a 4 cylinder it would be downstream after the catalytic converter .

V6 3.3L The sensor is located underneath the air intake manifold on top of the engine block. This should take an experienced mechanic about 3-4 hours to replace.

Where is the engine temp sensor located in a 94 dodge spirit. 2.5 liter car


It doesn't show an 'engine temperature sensor' for that year, make and model
What you do have is a Coolant Temperature Sensor (there are actually one of each on other makes and models - an engine temperature sensor and a coolant {radiator fluid} sensor). Just doesn't appear to be a separate engine temp sensor for the 94 2.5. The coolant temperature sensor is the sensor that will make your temp gauge in the car move. It's location is - Under hood, center, front engine area, near distributor, mounted in driver side of cylinder head. I've attached a pic of the sensor for you.

You also have an intake air temperature sensor and an ambient air temperature sensor that tells the computer the temp in the vehicle's cabin. I can shoot you that info if your question wasn't answered above.

2004 Trailblazer Left it runing for 2-3hrs, woke up engine off with ac giving hot air. Way home service engine came on. Codes for bad thermostat or bad heat sensor, but frirnd believed iy migjt be fan...


Suggest changing thermostat and temperature sensor, they are right next to each other and are relatively inexpensive. Whoever does the repair should disconnect the battery during the repair to reset the computer.
The fan clutch will usually not engage fully until the engine is really hot, somewhere around 250+ deg.

Well, I would say that it means that SOMEBODY is confused!

Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0072 is defined by SAE J2012 as "Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Low" DTC P0073 is defined as "Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit High"

I do not know how the ambient air temperature sensor circuit could be faulted both HIGH and LOW at the same time.

The only thing I have ever seen cause something like this is when people try to install aftermarket "performance chips" on their vehicles which "lie" to the computer about what the ambient air temperature is.

On my 2003 Dodge neon sxt the cooling fan stays on all the time, even when engine is cold. What generally causes this ?


If you air conditioner is turned on, even when starting, the cooling fan will turn on. So make sure you turn the air conditioner off before you change the thermostat. But if it still comes on with the AC off, then I will agree with Carl diagnosis.

P0116 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Range/Performance Problem
The ECT (Engine coolant temperature) sensor is a thermistor which changes resistance based on temperature of the coolant in contact with it. The ECT sensor will be located in the block or coolant passage. Usually it is a two wire sensor. One wire is a 5 Volt supply from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to the ECT. The other is a ground to the ECT.

As the temperature of the coolant changes the resistance on the signal wire changes accordingly. The PCM monitors the reading and determines coolant temperature in order to perform essential engine fuel management. When engine coolant is low, sensor resistance is high. The PCM will see a high signal voltage (low temperature). When coolant is warm, the sensor's resistance is low and the PCM will see a high temperature. The PCM expects to see slow resistance changes on the ECT signal circuit. If it sees a quick change in voltage that isn't consistent with an engine warming up, this P0116 code will set. Or if it sees a lack of change in ECT signal, this code may set.

Symptoms: There may be no noticeable symptoms if the problem is very intermittent, however the following may occur:
MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
Poor drivability
Black smoke at tailpipe
Poor fuel economy
May not idle
May exhibit stalling or misfires

Causes: Potential causes of the P0116 code include:
Missing or stuck-open thermostat
Bad ECT sensor
Short or open on signal wire
Short or open on ground wire
Poor connections in wiring

Possible Solutions: If there are any other ECT sensor codes, diagnose them first.
Using a scan tool, check the ECT reading. On a cold engine, it should match the IAT reading or should be equal to ambient (outside) temperature reading. If it does match the IAT or ambient temp, check the freeze frame data on your scan tool (if equipped). The saved data should tell you what the ECT reading was when the fault occurred.

a) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the coldest exreme (around -30 deg. F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently high (unless you live in Anchorage!) Check for an open in the ECT sensor ground and signal circuits and repair as necessary. If they appear okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

b) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the warmest exreme (around 250+ deg.F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently low. Check for a short to ground on the signal circuit and repair as necessary. If it appears okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

P0128 Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125

In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.

Symptoms: You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.

Causes: A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Low engine coolant level
Leaking or stuck open thermostat
Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor

Possible Solutions: Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
Verify coolant strength & level
Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat
If Nissan vehicle, check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), as the ECM may need to be reprogrammed to correct the P0128 code



These codes are telling you that the engine temperature is not sufficient. This can be caused by a faulty coolant sensor,air in the cooling system,or a faulty computer.
The engine should run at 190 F & higher when warmed up. Scan the computer system to view engine temperature.

My car temp gauge showed over heating at highway speed. Then upper rad hose blew. Pulled over and had car towed home. I have a Matco tools code reader. Computer doesn't show any codes. Why would that...


Using your tatco code reader, select current data (real-time data) and select engine coolant temp sensor (ECT). Run engine to operating temperature (A/C off). Monitor the temp reading - when the temp reaches approx 204 deg farenheit, the fans should kick on, after the temp drops to approx 198 deg farenheit, the fans should turn off. The fans are controled by the ECM (Engine Control Module). The ECM controls the cooling fan relays.

When air comes on it goes to windshield then later to floor before coming out the front vents what would cause this?


Hi there,

There are 2 types of Air-conditioning fitted to vehicles:

1) Manual Air - this is where you turn your temp dial to either Cold (Blue) or Hot (Red) and the heater will continue produces the same temperature at all times, until you manually change the setting.

2) Auto/Climate Air-conditioning - this is the INTELLIGENT aircon system, with many sensors placed around the car's interior. This system allows you to select your desired temperature in degrees (e.g. 18 deg C). Once you have chosen your desired temperature, the system then measures the inside temp at each sensor location. The sensor readings are sent back to your aircon computer and this is where the magic happens:

The computer then directs a priority airflow to the areas of your vehicle which would enable the system to reach 18 degrees, in the shortest possible time (this is why airflow changes between various vent outlets). As the system approaches your desired temperature, you will notice the airflow will slow down just enough to maintain a comfortable 18 deg - this is why they call it CLIMATE aircon.

However, if you choose to override the vent direction (i.e. selecting face vents only), they system will take a couple of seconds to respond to your command.
