SOURCE: how do I reset diagnostic
The easiest thing to try if you don't have a code reader that can erase codes is to remove both negative and positive battery terminals and hold them together for about a minute, this should drain all power from the battery and cause it to erase those trouble codes. If that doesn't work either buy a cheap code reader for $50-$100 that can erase codes.

SOURCE: diagnostic code for 96 ford
Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve Which usually means the Canister Purge Assembly. This assembly connects the intake manifold to the
charcoal canister and the assembly is made up of hoses, a valve and a sensor.
F57Z-9C987-AB Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 2.3L F57Z-9C987-CA Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 3.0L F57Z-9C87-BA Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 4.0L
But double check for the right part number since my part catalog is for a 1997 and not a 1996.
