Question about 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

How do you calibrate gauges on 2003 silverado when you change stepper motors?

I have some cluster bulbs out and when I took my cluster apart to change bulbs (they are soldered in) I noticed I have the original X5 stepper motors for the gauges. They all work but I am thinking about upgrading them to the newer X27 motors while it is apart. My question is how do you calibrate the new stepper motors (gauges) after you solder them in?

My oil pressure gauge always reads as high as it can go when the truck is running. I actually think it is a bad stepper motor. Can anyone confirm my suspicion?

unplug the oil pressure sender and see if the gauge goes to zero. If it does than the old cluster was not working properly and the new one is. If the gauge continues to peg with the sender unplugged than your on the right track with a bad cluster.

Gauge cluster on 2003 silverado does not function properly

GM seems to have had poor stepper motors in the early to mid 2000s. Replace with a new cluster or pick one up from the junkyard - beware milage may be programed in the cluster.

Speedometer not working chevy ss 2003

GM had gauge cluster problems from 2000-2005. Bad stepper motors. On those units you have to replace the cluster or rebuild it with new stepper motors.

My speedometer is not working right. How do i fix it?

The problem is usually defective stepper motors. If you are electronic and mechanical minded,
order new stepper motors from ebay. ( )
A set of six replacement motors are around $30.00 and it should take you around 1 hour to complete. I would also recommend getting replacement light bulbs while you have the cluster dis-assembled. After replacing the motors temporarily plug the circuit board back into the wiring harness, with the key in the off position. This will cause all of the stepper motors to find the home or zero position. Re-assemble the cluster being very careful not to rotate the motor while installing the gauge needles. Aligned the needles to the lowest gauge line for all gauges (MPH, RPM, Fuel, Temp, Oil and Voltage). If you have chosen to only fix the one that is broken, (not always a bad motto) you only have to test and calibrate one item. Apply power once more with the key off, before re-assembly of the cluster to verify all of the gauges align to zero. Re-assemble the cluster and the dash. It would be a good idea to verify the speedometer needle has been placed on the stepper motor correctly, by comparing your indicated speed with a GPS.
If you do not know how to properly de-solder, or have a friend who does, I would recommend the cluster repair service ( ) for repair for $58.00.

2003 chevy silverado, fuel gauge started registere...

Common problem on the 03-06 Silverado instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Silverado fuel gauge problems

All gauges pegged to the left

This is very common on 2003-2007 chevy trucks and suv's.
The stepper motors behind your cluster go bad. Do not go to the dealer, instead go online and look up cluster repair for your yr. of silverado and preferably in yor area. Price should range from 115.00-200.00 for all new motors, mine has 7
