Stuck in park position

Cannot get out of park position. Stepping on brake pedal will not release out of park position.

Check the brake switch and adjust or replace accordingly. It must be tripped for the car to be able to shift. It is behind the pedal.

You have a shift interlock problem . What kind of vehicle ? a mercury what ?
Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator mounted on the selector lever. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is disabled when the brake pedal is depressed.
If the selector lever will not move out of PARK with the key in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed, it will need to be unlocked manually.
Do the brake lights work ?
Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage; refer to the following chart:

DISCONNECT BRAKE PEDAL 1991 SUBURBAN


98 Suburban 5.7L, automatic trans is stuck in park - no previous shifting problems, I know that the brake switch also operates the brake/transmission solenoid (BTS). Stepping on the brake pedal prior to starting the vehicle allows shifting from park to another gear. When I switch the key to the "on" position, I don't hear the BTS click. I can start the vehicle and the brake lights work fine. I just can't shift out of Park. I am unemployed and I am trying to troubleshoot this problem and fix it myself. Please help!

Do you mean that the parking brake works when you press the pedal down but the pedal does not STAY down? If this is the case, you should look at the parking brake mechanism to make sure that the lever that releases the brake is not stuck (the release cable attaches to it - SEE PICTURE BELOW). You will have to remove the lower dash cover to do this. Sometimes the lever gets stuck in the "relaese" position when you pull the cable. Some spray lithium grease usually works well in getting it working again.

If the lever is not sticking, then the ratchet mechanism is dammaged and the pedal assembly will have to be replaced. The assembly is only attached to the vehicle with 3 bolts. It can be a little tricky getting the main cable disconnected fronm the old pedal assembly and connected to the new pedal assembly, but other than that it is not hard to change.

My 2006 impala is stuck in park and I need to know how to get it out of park to get it to the shop?


More the nlikely your brake light switch is defective or loose.
This switch also controls the release of the shifter so you cannot shift from park unless you're stepping on the brake.
The switch is located in the brake pedal up ubder the dash.

Turn the key to unlock the the system but do not start the vehicle, shift into neutral and start, you should be able to go from there.

Check or replace the switch as necessary. Be careful though as your brake lights may also not work.

Check your brake lights and see if they are working. The solenoid in the shifter is energized by you stepping on the brake. If your break lights do not work... your stuck in park. This can be caused by a bad brake light switch located above your brake pedal or.... a blown hazard / brake light fuse. Check them first.....

My 2001 ford focus is stuck in park, stepping on brake, does not release it from park, and brake lights are not working.........


Without the brake lights working the shift interlock can't release. Turn the key just off the "locked" position and you should be able to shift to neutral and start the engine then shift to drive or reverse. Just don't shift back into park until you are parking the car to leave it.

Suburban stuck in PARK


I accidently posted under 2004 Envoy - actually a 1997 Chevy Suburban. Found the switch on the brake actuator rod, sprayed with WD 40 (sloppy - hit or miss) - and moved the switch around. Now works fine. If I could find a way to remove the switch, I would replace. I may find the wires for the power and release servo and jump those out with a remote switch in case of future problems.

2005 dodge magum locked in park will start up


there is a shift solenoid connected to the brake pedal circuit to release the shifter.it is the click you hear when stepping on the brake.otherwise it stays in park.
the manual overide will let you put it in gear.

Shifting Gear is Stuck in ''Park'' position


u will need to check and make sure the brake lights work, the shifter is tied to the brake light switch, if the brake lights don't work or the brake pedal is not pushed a gear shifter lock out is engaged, this is a Federally mandated safety feature.
