my 97 lesabre sometimes won't crank and the next minute starts like new. "The security light seems to be on. I tried my spare key and there hasn't been a problem so far today? Could this be the chip in the key?

Assuming the key is the 1 the you have always been using and no battery changes in the vehicle , there are 4 fuses involved with the security system , i would start by checking them . right rear of engine compartment holds 1 maxi fuse #4 20 amp PCM VATS , and 3 other others in the I/P fuse box , get a tester and check all fuses .

Ok..
Your vehicle is equipaded with Factory Anti Theft System.
Called Pass key II . If the mechanic found the Code
Pass key error....
Is there a few test to Do. to know exactly the problem.

1--- check if the Old and New key Are equipaded with a Little thing (Chip or Ressistence) in the center of the key.
If not you need a key with the chip. and the correct Ohms.

2. If you just replace the battery,
Full charge the battery Attemp to start the vehicle and leave the key in run position for exactly 11 Minutes, Them turn the key to off position for 30 seconds and try to start, if the vehicle start . you did the prosses to program the key.

If the vehicle not start.
Some times this procedure will require Up to 3 times to setup.
Or more with intervals of 30 minutes,, But if not start.
Remove the lower cover of the steering column. and the the Connector orange with 2 white wires shielded with a orange cover.
NOTE.. Be sure to not Confuse with the Yellow wires and connector, They are for the AIR BAG. Dont use a Convencinal Test light on any of the Mentionated wires....

After you find the wire and saw everything ok.

3-- You will need to remove the Ignition Lock cylinder.
The ignition lock cylinder is use 2 white wires shielded with orange cover, On 90% of the cases one of the wires come broken. and the ECM loss the comunication with the Chip incrusted in the key..

First place to check would be a fuse.  See if there is one labled security or alarm.  If there is try changing that.

SOURCE: 1995 Buick LeSabre won't start when security light comes on.

When my 1994 LaSabre had a problem recognizing the chip in the key (due to the contacts in the lock not working), I managed to bypass the system by locating the two wires (clear tube with two smaller wires in it exiting the steerin column, unlike any other wiring), cutting the cable, and soldering a resistor across the two wires that go to the hidden module thet in turn controlls the starter and sends a signal to the engine computer. Use a resistor of the same resistamce value as in one of the keys for the car (measure resistors with a digital meter). There are a dozen or so values used. You loose the extra protection of the chip, but the fix is low cost.

you can bypass the security system entirely like I did. Once and for all. There is a great DIY write-up here http://newrockies.ca - it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

SOURCE: 1997 LeSabre- Security light in dash is constantly

ok the security light is on because it isn't reading the chip pellet in the key. The problem with the is usually either bad key, bad pickup in the cylinder, or bad paskey unit. if it is the key or the cylinder then you can bypass the unit by adding a resistor to match the key resistance and attach it to the violet and white wires at the bottom of the column. I do alot of bypasses on these passkey units, it works wonderful.

Your stalling however sounds like a different problem.. since the security system only disables the starting feature and not the running of the vehicle. But with the 3800 engine the cranshaft sensor or sensor wiring, as the engine gets hot causes shorting to the computer and shuts engine down. I would look into that to solve your problems.

When this happens, look around the dash area for a light that says SECURITY. If you see this light, then it means you are having PASSLOCK security issues. This will cause the car to not start. This link has tons of info and DO IT YOURSELF solutions to passlock problems.

Security light on dash litgths car will not start

Usually when this happens, the alarm system prevents the car from being started. You will have to reset it or reprogram the security system. It might tell you how in your owner manual. If not, you will need to call a Buick dealership to get it.
