If the vacuum (noise) is coming from the inside of the vehicle there is a good chance that it is the brake booster that is connected behind the brake master cylinder on the firewall....

  • Anonymous Oct 23, 2012

You can test it by locating the vacuum booster tank behind the brake master cylinder. Disconnect the vacuum line should be a 3/8 tube connected to a right angle button that goes into the left side (if your looking at it from the front of the vehicle) disconnect the tube and block it off.( the vacuum tube) start the engine get inside the vehicle and see if the noise is still there when you push the brake. If it's not the cannister is your problem and is easy to replace.

SOURCE: no brakes after changing brake caliper & bleeding system

Sounds like you still have air in your brake lines. Make sure all your brake lines are tight. Then bleed again. Bleed the trouble side first, meaning right side, then go to front left, back left then back right, make sure that your brake fluid is also full

SOURCE: rear brake grinding noise when pressing on brakes

The grinding noise in the rear brake drum means that brake shoes are warn out and the metal part of the shoe is touching the drum. You need to replace it asap as it will damage the inner part of the drum and than replacing shoes will not help without skimming or replacing the drum.

SOURCE: ford f250 diesel . front brakes come on when

has anything been done with master cylinder or booster or brake light switch?? if the adjustment is off, the master will not release the brakes even if the pedal is back, although its rare if nothing has been replaced recenlty, next time the brakes drag, loosen the master bolts (2) about 1/8" and see if they release, if so either the adj is off or the master cyl is bad.

SOURCE: my power brakes failed and i can hear an air leak,

IF YOUR HEARING IT IN THE CAB YOU MAY HAVE A LEAK AT THE BOOSTER WHERE THE PEDAL ENTERS IT GET UNDER THE DASH AND PRESS THE PEDAL BY HAND AND SEE IF YOU CAN HEAR IT COMING FROM WHERE THE PEDAL ROD GOES INTO THE FIRE WALL

Where is the vacuum hose

That is either your power brake booster leaking or the vacuum hose going from the brake booster to the intake manifold that is leaking.

WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKE I CAN HERE WHAT SOUNDS LIKE AN AIR LEAK AND THE TRUCKS TRIES TO DIE.

Your brake booster is powered by vacuum, so the air noise is required for function. Check the engine setup, mixture, idle speed, etc.

Brake pedal got hard now it takes everything you have to stop it from moving

skdavisbob, This sounds like you have a problem with the brake booster that is attached to the firewall. When these boosters fail it is like trying to stop a house as you describe here. There is a one way check valve near the top of the booster that uses vacuum from the engine to operate. Inspect the hose and be sure that it is attached at both ends and that there are no leaks in this hose. This can be done by running the engine and listening for a leak. (hissing noise) Replace the hose if faulty. If you don't hear any vacuum leak then turn the engine off and pull the check valve out of the booster. This takes a little effort as it is quite secure in the grommet. You should hear a vacuum leak for a split second because when the valve is removed it will allow air in (if it is working properly) and you should hear the leak. If you don't hear the hiss, then test the valve by blowing through it both ways. As stated, this is a one way valve and you should be able to blow air through one way but not the other. If you can blow air both ways then the check valve is faulty. If the hose and valve are working properly then you will have to have the booster replaced. Good luck with this.

I have a 1995 GM Suburban and when I press on the brake I hear noise like air and I have to almost touch the brake all the way to the floor. I was told that it could be the master cyclinder. If it is...

If it sounds like rushing air when you hit the brakes I would suspect the vacuum booster first. There is no air venting through the master cylinder but the booster is connected to a vacuum line. Kind of a pain in the *** to change, you have to remove the master cylinder, then get up underneath the dash and remove the bolts which go through the firewall and hold the booster. You may also have to disconnect the actuating rod which connects to the brake pedal arm. I would toss in a new master cylinder too when you put it back together. Do not put a used wear item in your vehicle unless you want to do the job again soon.

Air pressure sound when i push on the brakes

air pressure sound may come from a leaky vacuum hose or bad check valve at the booster or master cylinder.

But, I think that it's normal to hear a soft hissing sound when depressing the brake pedal which comes from hydraulic fluid going through the passage ways.

Is the pedal hard?

Press pedel makes air swishing sound but no power brake pressure

The power brake booster, is not holding vacuum, that's the hissing noise you hear, and that's why you don't have power brake's, the only fix is replacing the booster.

1999 Suburban Chevy, Every time I press the brake pedel I can hear air comming from the rubber boot inside the cab. Is the brake booster gone/going bad?

Usually, a hissing noise when you press the brake pedal is indicative of a leaking brake booster, yes.

While sitting still, idling, have someone else push the brake and grab a piece of garden hose or something, hold it to your ear, and listen up under the dash to find out if the noise is actually coming from that area, or you could also just pinch the line with a pair of vice grips, and see if you still hear the noise.

Your brakes will not cease to function as a result of a booster leak, but if it fails completely, they will become substantially more difficult to use.
