2001 Grand Prix GT Shift and Ignition problem

When I turn my car off the key does not turn all the way off. If I jiggle or move the shift button sometimes it clicks and I can turn it off. Also the shift will not go into reverse after it has been started and I step on the brake to disenge it. the button on the underside does not want to push in like it is suppose to. Can you tell me what it is or how much it wil cost to fix. I loved this car but it has been a major problem since I bought It.

I'm having the same problem. Maybe it's a defect in the vehicle.

I have the same prob. There is a safety interconnect between the brake pedal, the steering wheel, the ign. sw. and the shifter. I've been told there is a cable between all this and it is a pain to replace. I bought this car in '05 w/ 80,000 miles on it, and I've had nothing but trouble. From front wheel bearings (7 in 40,000 miles), OD out of trans (rebuilt @ 140,000), wipers working whenever they want, to even the window switch panel breaking (replaced it 3 times), not to mention the ABS light and ck eng. lite on most of the time. Can't get enough out of it to sell......Uggggghhhh

It is in the switch, or you are getting a bad connection in your wires

Hello, I have a 2000 grand prix gt shift into gear and drive fine

Sounds like the filter might be plugging up. I would have it serviced. Do you have a check engine light on? How long do you have to leave the engine off before it will start moving again?

Car will not go into gear as the shifter is not moving at all.

oh you might have a shift locking problem could be related to your key ignition system and brake switch also would affect the shift lock

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix... Key stuck in ignition shifter will not move and car will not start. Got Battery check its ok replaced starter and solenoid was told it could be the ignition cylinder or swithch....

I think that you must have been using a doblicate key to start the engine it cannot be you ignition cylinder or swithch.. while now you will need to get it open in order to take out the key ..

Ignition key will only come out of ignition sometimes

Ahh, yes.

As a Grand Prix owner myself, I had the same issue.

The device that allows you to release your key is called a Shift Lock Solenoid. This engages/disengages when you press the release button on your shifter.

The most common thing for people to do is to slam your shifter into park. Please don't do that. It won't help, and in most cases cause more problems.

To get you by for the time being, you can do one of two things.

Carry a small pointy object to manually release it by removing the small round cover under your steering column. Take your object of choice and push it up into that hole and then turn your key back to get it out of the ignition.

Or, get it fixed.

Another trick when you are unable to get the key out is this,
1. Turn your radio off, and fans etc, so there is no noise.
2. Squeeze your shift release on the console a couple of times; you should hear a click in your column. If nothing happens, turn your key just a touch more towards the on position and continually squeeze the release till you hear the click in your column, then you are able to turn your key back to the lock position and pull out the key.

Hope this helps.
