I am getting two codes
P0101 - AFS Range / Performance
P1870 - Not defined
I was told to replace the mass air flow sensor Will this correct this problem and is the second error related to the first? will they both clear?

Re: Emmission codes, Mass air flow sensor
The P0101 code is indeed a code indicating an issue with the MAF sensor. It could be something as simple as cleaning the sensor, or it could be faulty and in need of replacement.
Now, the P1870 code refers to the transmission, and a condition in which the PCM is detecting excessive slipping. That is to say it perceives the transmission slipping as it compares engine speed (RPM) and vehicle speed (MPH) and should a ratio be exceeded then the PCM will set code P1870. I would expect that you would notice a bit harsher shifting in response to this code, particularly on the 1-2 shift as the PCM will command higher fluid pressure to combat the slipping.
Now, it is possible that the an issue with the MAF would cause signals to the PCM to change significantly and to such an extent that the PCM would think something is off with the transmission, so I would start there, with the MAF sensor and see if that helps as it appears you were already thinking.

- Dirty mass air flow sensor
- Dirty mass air filter
- Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
- Mass air flow sensor electrical circuit poor connection
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty mass air flow sensor
Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter
and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow
sensor cleaner. Reset code and drive vehicle. If the code comes back, it
may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.
Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0101 has a generic description of "Mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance problem". This can be caused by several things including:
> Dirty air filter > Air leak in air intake system > Contaminated, deterriorated or damaged Mass Air Flow Sensor > Poor electrical connections at the Engine Control Module, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) > Faulty MAF or TPS
You should check your air filter and air intake system visually and correct any obvious defects/leaks first.
If a visual inspection does not turn up the cause, then you will need a scan tool capable of reading sensor data to verify the function of the MAF and TPS. You will also need proper electrical diagnostic equipment to verify the integrity of the circuits and continue with diagnosis.
ok heres problem 101 is mass air flow sensor 171 running too rich 174 running too lean can find 429 but it the same lines i believe take out your mass air flow sensor and clean it check it connection if comes back on replace the mass air flow sensor
