Question about 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Knocking I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.7L engine and the other day I started getting a knock about every 15 seconds right above the engine where the intake goes into the engine. It is a black little box that connects to the intake on top of the motor. When this started happening the check engine light came on. What could possibly be the problem?

I scanned it today and it said that there was no compression in cylender number 2 but that came back and the knocking is still there. There is absolutely no power.

First, if the noise is from the upper part of the engine and is more of a tapping than a knock, likely you have a problem in the valvetrain, most often a bad lifter or worn rocker arm. If the noise is low, deep inside, the noise is from a bearing. This is generally accompanied by lower than normal oil pressure. Regardless of the underlying cause, correcting the cause will not stop the knock. To do that correctly, the engine needs to be removed and all crankshaft bearings and the crankshaft itself need to be replaced (crank can sometimes be "undercut" and thicker bearing shells can be used depending upon the amount of wear.) If caught very early, sometimes only one bearing can be replaced in-car, but in 99% of all cases I have ever seen, most will fail again, sometimes more severely if done this way.

If you have zero oil pressure thats a BAD sign, first have a mechanic check what the engines actual oil pressures are.

'99 jeep grand cherokee v6 loose rod in engine

Likely you need more than one (not rod, but rod bearings) In most cases you get knocking noise and low oil pressure as symptoms. If caught early you can do this in-car otherwise engine needs crankshaft and all bearings as well as new pump and system flush.
