Question about 2006 Toyota RAV4

Cannot get the 120amp Alt fuse out of the fuse block

My son inadvertantly put his new battery in backwards and blew the Alt fuse in his 2006 Rav4. I know its bolted into the fuse block but I can't figure out how to get the fuse block out to get to the screws on the bottom. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the help Ed. Using the info I got off of here last night we were able to get the fuse block seperated and the screws out of the bottom of the fuse. Turns out it had blown a couple of other fuses as well. Changed all of the blown fuses and the car runs like a champ.

thanks ed... don't mind being wrong about something like that

No, it won't be "welded". It is nothing more than a properly rated fuse, once it opens, the current ceases to flow.

You have to remove the fuse box mounting bolts. Then, you have to disable the locking tabs on the exterior of the fuse box. The outer "shell" of the fuse box slides down, it does not "come off". Once the shell is moved downward, the bolts for the fuses are visible. This is NOT an easy job.

it's very likely welded in now... i suspect you will find other damage to the electrical system as well

Battery light will not operate

Check all fuses and verify no melted/damaged wires. You may have damaged something on the charging circuit by reversing the current. The battery light comes on when the alternator is not charging so I would double check the alternator at a different location as it sometimes will show good at one place and bad at another...Also have the battery checked to make sure there was no damage to it in the process and pray that the main fuse blew before any severe damage was caused.

i would double check the fuses and then check the charging system.for some reason the alt fuse blew unless it was jumped off backwards or cables were hooked up backwards.on all toyota the batt and brake light will come on when it is not charging.make sure all fuses are good and alt has power at the big wire on top.

your best frinds here are a test light and a dvom(digital volt ohm meter) check each fuse then start checking wires, unfortunately its a long process , and check and clean all the grounds and battery connections

No charge to battery

IN ORDER:
Check the 120amp Alternator Fusible link#13 (for 2002 model) located in the fusible link block. (Note: a fusible link is a properly sized piece of wire that is designed to provide major protection when a short occurs) as regular fuses provide minor issue protection.

Check the 5amp ALT-S fuse as this directly affects charging.

Lastly check the 10amp IG2 fuse.

You may find that you have now have a spare alternator (your orginal that was ok) OR You can always sell it on ebay or craigslist.

Cannot get the 120amp Alt fuse out of the fuse block

You need to remove all of the bolts that holds the fuseboc onto the inner fender. The fusebox seperates into two pieces. The outer shell drops away from the center by depressing and releasing the lock tabs. After the outer shell is lowered, the bolts for the 120 amp fuse are visible.
