Hello,I have a 1997 Nissan terrano VG 33 engine.sometimes the rev count just drops and the vehicle switches off but is able to start after just 10 seconds and then switches off and then starts again. The following day the vehicle just drives well for say a week and then the problem rucurs.there so many varied opinions fromthe mechanics I have consulted that I do not want to take chances.one said it might be the fuel pump, whilst another said it could be idling low.I changed the fuel filter in last one month.the vehicle sounds like it starving for fuel even when there is more than half a tank and the fuel gauge does not seem to work sometimes and at times the fuel gauge works, thanks Gilbert
If you changed fuel filter, check pump output. Or you have dirt in the fuel tank. Drain and inspect tank.=, or line going to the filter for clear fuel flow.
Testimonial: "at least I have established that the there is no dirt in the tank and its not the pump, something to do with knock sensor now"
thanks for the help ,will try the suggestion tommorrow and give feedback
the tank was checked and does not have dirt and the fuel pump is working ok,the mechanic suggests that it could be the plugs and its getting irritating now.I have decided to go for computer diagonosis, problem is it is 140 km away
so the computer diagonistic gives two error codes-mass air flow sensor and knock sensor and just shows that the previous owner could have changed something and not cleared the codes.the codes are cleared and after a week the problem occurs twice but not as severe as before and the code reads 34 meaning knock sensor for the vehicle,my question is ,"will simply changing the knock sensor solve the problem or is it bigger than that"
The KNOCK sensor code has come up twice, this means the fault is in the knock sensor system,. The knock sensor monitors the fuel mixture and ignition.. So you have to check ALL items of that system and last of all the sensor and it's connections. The fuel system starts at the AIR CLEANER, - affects mixture ratio. INTAKE MANIFOLD - use a cleaning spray (DO NOT PUSH IN CLOTH TO CLEAN IT) . WRONG GRADE OF FUEL, OVER HEATED CYL HEAD. many faults even down to incorrect spark plugs.
thanks tedsabat, will work on it though the problem comes after say a week or so,will observe and work on it as advised, thanks a lot gilbert

sounds like fuel pump pressure. I had the same thing happen to me in a Lincoln mark VII and the electrical connection was shorting out in the fuel pump. I changed the fuel pump..Returned under warranty) put the new one on with filter and had no problem with it.

cracked fuel line sucking air bubbles? i have the same problem right now with my 85 ram and am about to replace the rubber lines out of desparation.

There is a relay on the rh passenger side kick panel above the automatic transmission module that is controlled by the ECU through the MAF sensor that controls your fuel to the engine so the air / fuel mixture is correct. I fixed a pathfinder one time with a similar stalling problem.

Every answer here is wrong. This has been driving people nuts for 15 years. The problem is the engine wiring harness which has a bend going past the right strut tower, Nissan had a service bulletin on this in September of 1999, Google it, it's in pdf.

All fuel tanks have a breather pipe, if this short piece of pipe is blocked with road dirt, fuel cannot be sucked into the system. Also check that there are no air leaks at fuel pipe joints, with soap water.
thanks for the advice will get mechanic to check and give you feedback
