Question about 1993 Mazda 626

My 1993 Mazda unextectedly stops running

The last two times I have driven my 1993 Mazda 626, the engine has stopped for no apparent reason. Both times, the car was around 2000 rpm. Once was on the freeway, and I was lucky to be able to get to the right and stop. When I tried to restart it, the engine turned over, but did not start. Then, each time, I opened the hood, wiggled some wires (I am no mechanic!!!), got back in the car and it started again. Apparently my neice had the same problem with her mid 90s 626 as well. It was never properly diagnosed, so she sold it. Any clues?

Other facts that might be helpful... Each time, it was in the upper 20's-low 30's. The car had been running about 20 minutes, was neither accelerating or decelerating. The engine temp was normal, neither high nor low. Also, the wires I jiggled were spark plug wires, and that is likely not the problem, as if there was one faulty spark plug wire, the car would not stop, just run roughly (which it did not do). Also, after the second time, when I did get the car running, I then jiggle the wires quite a bit to see if the car would then stop, and it didn't stop. These things might be helpful for you to know. Thank you. Spencer

It turned out to be the distributor. The mechanic thought it was just loose connections, as when he tightened them back up, the car started again, but it died about 5 miles down the road (on the fwy, of course) and then he just replaced the distributor, and it seems to be just fine. Fortunately my brother in law diagnosed that it had to do with no spark, because it LOOKED like it was a fuel problem by its symptoms. Thank you for your comments.. they did help me to look in both the fuel and the no spark directions..

just as the other guys car i have a 93 mazda 626 4cyl and it would not start just turn over is all until the battery died. towed it to the mech and he changed the fuel pump and the ignition module. went and picked it up and it started wonderful so i drove home. While pulling into the driveway the engine hesitated and shut off. It has not restarted since. Only turning over. The plugs are wet with gas, so the fuel pump works, but there is no spark in the plugs. what could be the problem?

there is always a reason, check fuel press, check spark.

1993 mazda 626 auto, starts fine when cold, but not when I've driven it for a while.

I would start with a good tune up, including the intake gasket. Changes in temperature could cause gaskets to stop sealing properly letting unmeasured air inside the engine. Also check for fuel filter.

Engine just stops sometimes for no reason. I put gear lever in pa

most probably the throttle body is whats causing it to stop. first try removing it and clean it thoroughly with any carburetor and choke cleaner if that didn't solve the problem have the engine diagnosed for any faults or errors
