When this happens, have someone listen under the car and see if the fuel pump is coming on. Either the pump or relay may be going bad.
An easy check for the relay is to see if there are any non-essential relays with the same # on them (like a fan relay) when your'e having the problem, temporarily switch the two relays. If this helps, then replace the relay. Before condemming the pump, replace the fuel filter (often neglected), and do pressure tests at fuel rail to see what you are dealing with. Note: it does not have to be fuel... A bad coil or crank sensor can do essentially the same stuff so, don't jump to conclusions before making tests!
good luck

with no codes, I'd have to believe (for now) that the problem is mechanical. Did you replace fuel filter and actually check rail pressure? How about the pressure regulator on the end of the rail? (part of testing)

  • Richard Scordino Jan 06, 2009

If I took calls on this stuff I'd be crazier than I already am! First problem is that though I gave you good general info, In my head I was thinking inline 6.You have a V6, likely with a throttle body injection system. On some of those, the regulator is on the throttle body on others, it's in the tank pump/sending unit assembly. I think, on yours its a filter/regulator all in one. On tbi engines you need an adaptor to get pressure readings (a squirt does not tell you pressure or delivery amount).
Instead of doing all those tests, let's go back a few steps... How do you start it after the problem happens? When it is in "no start" can you see fuel going into the tbi when you look down into it while cranking? Do you have spark when it's cranking? If you remove a sparkplug, is it wet or dry when in no start? What colour are the plugs? (look at the porcelan just below the electrode) A tech listens, looks, and even makes note on smells while testing. I can't do that from here or even by phone!!!
Even though I dislike the haynes manuals, I rember seeing fairly good fuel pressure tests in there. BUT I don't believe you have it narrowed down sufficiently to be there yet!

What is a plau cable coil????

  • Richard Scordino Jan 07, 2009

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS I WROTE get a haynes manual and read it carefully!!!! If you cannot do this you will just stumble around and MAYBE by accident, find out what's wrong with it.
And yes...write stuff in english so I don't have to spend time figuring out what the words mean. I asked you about three questions, and added another source of info. You aren't doing the testing necessary
Get a notebook, test everything related. When finished, it will give you a picture of whats going on in there. Did you try starting at part or full throttle (if it starts like that, make sure you back off right away so as not to hurt it.
NOW go and get a manual (I can't re-write one for you) and TEST!!!

I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee drive it a while turn the engine off wont start back up

Your starter solenoid armature is sticking. It is mounted atop the starter and the heat from the exhaust manifold sometimes causes this problem on older systems. You can try a temporary fix by placing some type of heat shield over the solenoid using something that is fire proof but replacing the solenoid will eventually be necessary.

does your temp gage seem off does it go like up to the h because if it does you could try unpluging your upper coolent sensor because that could cause that because it is telling you computer to run in closed loop when it should be running in open loop

Engine runs fine, no problem want's tempature is

I had a similar problem with a Ford Excursion, it turned out to be intake manifold gaskets. It would stall then start right up again, it ran fine during warm up. But, once fully warmed up it would stall at stop lights and stuff like that. I did get a check engine light, the code was lean condition. I don't know on a Jeep, sorry I can't be of more help.

1998 jeep grand cherokee keeps shifting up & down when it is warm

You cannot drive with different size tires front and back, especially with full time 4x4's the tires travel different distances when rolling.. a one inch height difference translates to a three inch rolling difference...ten turns of the tire = a thirty inch difference in distance traveled between the front and rear of the vehicle..being all attached to the same point (the transfer case) there is no way to compensate, therefore something must fail or the vehicle will stop in a locked up (bound up) condition. The weak link is the viscous coupler in the transfer case...likely what has failed.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Ignition Lights Come on but wont crank

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.
