How do i remove the fan and pulley on a 1987 ford ranger 2.9 v-6?

The question is: How remove clutch in order to remove fan mounted on its engine-side face.
  • Generally, the clutch drive half shaft must be uncoupled from coolant pump (impeller drive) half shaft using special wrench kit available as loaner from AutoZone (free with $79 approx deposit).
  • Best done after shroud & radiator remove after coolant drained.
  1. Uncouple coolant pump and fan clutch drive shaft(s) as follows:
    1. span across combo-pulley-sheaves-unit mounting bolt heads with large tool kit wrench, and
    2. span inline clutch coupling nut with small tool kit wrench. Then,
    3. turn small wrench (and coupling nut) CW while resisting with large wrench (CCW) to turn coupling nut until disengaged from coolant pump drive shaft.
  2. Remove fan/clutch assembly.
  3. Note direction of mounted fan hub and fan blades orientation to ensure proper re-assembly.
  4. On rear of clutch assy, remove 4 bolts to disengage and remove fan.
  5. Assemble new fan to clutch (or, preferably, new clutch and new fan) using new bolts and washers provided with fan.
  6. Couple fan-clutch assy to coolant pump drive shaft as per opposite of uncoupling step 1, above. (Turn inline nut CCW to tighten...30 ft-lb.
  7. Check that fan can be hand turned...CW.)
  8. Rest shroud over and onto fan.
  9. Replace radiator; remount shroud; reclamp hoses, and refill and air purge cooling system.

Is replacing the half shaft on the passenger side difficult i have not removed the rubber boots, am i supposed to and do they thread on or do i need special tools/ thanks

if you have the new shaft, you will see what you need to do . the inner just has a small clip, just pry out the shaft. do not take the boots off. you will need to take the lower ball joint out.

Replacing the right wheel bearing how do u remove that hub do u need a special tool for it

is it a 4x4? the wheel bearing comes with a new hub assembley . Just find out what size the front half shaft nut/ lock nut/axle nut- is. its probably a 33mm thats the only special tool you will need. Unscrew it, take your outer tie rod off the spindle/steering knuckle, theres 3 bolts behind it, take them off then disconect the abs harness and pry out the old hub assembley use a rubber hammer (dead blow hammer) to tap the half shaft out if seized. when installing the new wheel bearing see your manufacturer specs. for torquing the axle nut back on.

Do i need a special tool to take the harmonic balancer off

not really special, but, you need a harmonic balancer pulley removing tool...Lots of larger parts store either loan them out or rent them. (if you buy one you may get to use it again in five years, unless you are a tech.) Why are you taking it off?

Oil seal leaking on 1999 gmc half ton 4w/d on front of transfere case do i need special tools or can I drop drive line and replace seal

billbohman: Unless GMC has had some change I am not aware of and that has not been published in service manuals for the repair of these units, the procedures are the same as any seal replacement and require no special tool. There are some universal seal installation tools which I would venture the majority of techs don't have because they substitute other tools in their place most of the time. Most techs will have a special tool designed from removing seals. However, the seal can be removed without it.
Just use a little common sense when removing a seal. Don't damage the casing.
Good Luck.

I removed my timing belt from my 1992 honda accord

The balance shafts have marks on their sprockets that line up with indents on the block. For the one with the pin, just use a drill bit shaft that seems to fit the best and look for the marks. You only have two choices as you turn the balance shaft and expose the alignment hole. One of those spots will have fairly obvious marks that line up at the sprocket. The other one has a mark toward the front of the block. I'll see if I can dig up a photo and post it. The other tricky part is tensioning the belts, it's done in two steps while half the tensioner is clamped in place by a spare timing cover bolt. If you need help with this, let me know.
Please, please don't forget to remove the alignment pin or the bolt you used to clamp the tensioner!
