Question about 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport
1984 Lincoln town car
I was driving in a country road in cold weather using the heater when heater started blowing cold air. Looking at the temp gauge I saw it very hot so I pulled over to the side of the road and waited for engine to cool down but when I had started to pull over, the car stalled as I slowed down. After the car cooled down, I poured in some windshield washer fluid (I was in the middle of nowhere out of cell phone range…at night) but I noticed that the cap to the plastic coolant reservoir was missing. I turned back and got a few miles down the road where I could refill my jug with water. I noticed that the car now ran very rough, if I didn’t maintain a speed of at least 40 mph, the engine would stall. At slow speed zones I downshifted to keep the rpms up. I stuck a wooden plug wrapped up in a sock to plug the reservoir and stop losing water until I was able to get home about 45 miles away. I got home with water still in the reservoir but it was boiling. The car runs very rough still and will stall if rpms are not kept up. I would like a rough idea what’s wrong before my local mechanic says that I need a water pump, radiator, thermostat and head gaskets. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on this car; I just need to get around a town with no public transportation. I recently had the car inspected and was told I need a new belt that runs the ac compressor and an air pump. Could that be it?
Your mechanics are worthless, trying to charge you for **** you don't need. Water pump or thermostat is possible. No. If it started blowing cold that means that either you were completely out of water, or that there is a stop in the water passage way somewhere. A sticking thermostat could be it, and maybe the water pump might be going out, doubtful tho if it works sometimes. I would replace the thermostat and see if that fixes the over heating problem.
Another thing, is the timing of the motor. That will cause it to stall at a low rpm and run rough, and also can cause over heating due to it detonating. Buy/rent/borrow a timing light and hook it up to the number one cylinder spark plug wire and shine the light at the harmonic balancer on the crank and check for timing. There should be lines on the crank and the block that line up if it's timed correctly. And the air pump shouldn't be bad or need a belt (if it's still spinning) but pull a vaccum test on the motor to see what the vacuum is at. Hopefully, this has helped you. Buying a repair manual at you local auto store should help you with changing your thermostat, timing, and vacuum test as well as what the vacuum of the motor should be.
