Could be a couple of things. If it smells sweet you may have a leak in your heater core. If it smells burnt it may be you heater fan is worn out. Does your fan make abnormal sounds?

1996 subaru legacy no heat, fan works great and thermostat replaced but still not heating up

heater core could be plugged, only way to check is to pull the heater hoses off and try to run water through it, if no water or little water then its plugged.. you would need to replace.

99 subaru legacy engine temp gauge overheating but no heat in car

sounds like your coolant level is low? this causes a air pocket in system and hot coolant does not reach the heater core in side of car to give you heat. This can also cause engine to run to hot.

No heat or defrost 1992 subaru legacy (air works fine)

Heater core..easy to replace..find the complete tear down and rebuild book for your car at any part store and follow the directions on how to change it.

Radiator... if its the rad then you pretty much are looking at about 800.00 to 1100.00 for this .
If its the radiator... you will notice your car will start to over heat.
It could be even more serious..like the block might be cracked.
If you see like a steam that looks like smoke coming from the tail pipe then its the block.
Again can be fixed for about 12 to 13 hundred bucks.
Hears hoping im wrong on all accounts.
cheers
