1995 jeep cherokee 5-speed 4.0 liter

Battery light had been on for about a week. Lights went dim - pulled over, turned it off, wouldn't start again. Bought NEW battery - while driving home battery light came on again. Was told maybe it's the alternator? How far can I drive before the battery dies again? Could I buy a, "used" alternator? HELP!

Battery wont last very long .you can buy a used alt. but you should try to get a remanufactured one. and you should have it checked first.

Hi there... All depending on what you have on in the truck while youre driving will determine the amount of time you have with a good battery. the more you have on the more the battery will drain. It's not a good idea to leave this problem for too long cause you can damage the new battery by discharging it completely. the battery will charge itself a bit without the alternator but it it's ******* the battery this way. You can get a ysed alternator from a wrecker but your gambling with it cause you don't know how long that one will last.
If you can afford it , your best off getting a new one that has warranty. Hope this helps you out.

Battery voltage is not a good indicator of the state of a battery.
Your starter can draw as much as 160 amps when trying to turn your engine. Turn on the ignition again and turn on the head lights as well. Are the bright or dim?? If they are dim, your battery is flat.
You may be able to charge it up, but that depends on how old it is as they have a service life which may have expired.

Was fine started great then voltage hand went left abs light came on brake light came on dome lights came on head lights went off all panel lights went crazy blinking then jeep would not start without

Seems to be having problems with the alternator. Alternator itself can be bad, but also the voltage regulator, which sits inside the PCM (powertrain control module).
Don´t continue using with battery voltage around the 10V, because it will ruin your battery as well. Completely charge the battery with an external battery charger and let the alternator be checked out first.

check the voltage on the battery with a volt meter, it should be around 12.6 to 13 volts, if not charge battery with a charger, after charge try to start vehicle, if the vehicle starts use your volt meter at the battery again, the voltage should be around 14 to 14.5 any lower and the battery isn't being charged and the alternator should be checked and or replaced to solve the problem..

So whenever I am driving my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in the winter (I live in ND so it gets pretty cold) when I brake my lights seem to dim and my battery voltage meter kind of acts up. Is it time...

Do you know how old the battery is?
Do you know if it is the correct one for your vehicle?
Have it tested at a shop or a parts store, if they do that.
You install the correct group size for your vehicle, again,
parts store can look at it or look that up.
There is no time to replace a battery. Some last 3 years.
All mine last 7 to 9 years
You install the largest CCA Battery yhat fits your vehicle,
especially in a cold climate. Approx 770 to 800 CCA
That suggestion is out, because you want cheap.
A good battery will cost you $110.00

You need to diagnose the cause of the dimming lights and volt meter issues.
The alternator needs to be tested.
Put a volt meter on the batt terminals, and get a reading, then turn everything
on and see if it is able to charge with a slight increasing in engine speed

If you truck has a convenience timer for the lights that may be the problem. When you exit the truck do your lights normally stay on and then slowly dim or go out? There will be a relay like unit plugged into the fuse panel marked light timer or something like that. Remove it and see, the interior lights should now probably not work at all. Just replace it with a new one or from a salvage yard.

Grand Cherokee wont start, clicking coming from interior fuse box

Bare or burned wire, most likely battery cable or alternator cable near exhaust system which might be making contact with a metal part somewhere, off and on, because of bumps, vibration, etc.

You have a problem in the regulator. (or field wire is grounded somewhere) Check which alt you have (some have external regulators) If internal, and field is not grounded, then alt has to come out (defective)
