I'm betting it's a blown seal in the ****** or a burned reverse clutch-pack. Revving the engine fairly high in spurts sometimes will give you a little backward movement but often with a grinding sound or a strong grab and lunge so NEVER do this with kids or people around. That indicates a transmission rebuild most likely. Automatics can get so ugly sometimes, they are very complicated pieces of machinery with lots and lots of precision parts and tolerances. I firmly believe you are better off going to the dealer to get a rebuilt ****** instead of going to AAMCO paying more, and getting a harshly shifting transmission in the end. I've done both and speak from experience.

Transmission dip stick keeps popping out

check trans. fluid level per owners manual. The high operating temperatures cause fluid to expand greatly,an over-filled transmission can actually force excess fluid out of the dip stick tube.check level with trans. hot, engine running in park on a level surface. After driving, place shifter in park, hold brake and move shifter through all gears and back to park.remove dipstick, wipe clean,re-insert and check fluid level.normally, trans fluid & filter should be changed +/- 100 k miles

If you have good reverse and bad drive it is not a low fluid condition.Low fluid will cause a slip in reverse before it does in drive. The modulator only creates a throttle reference based off engine vacuum and will not affect drive ingagement. If you suspect a low fluid condition just add two more quarts and see if anything changes. Overfull will not harm the transmission and the worst thing that can happen is some may come out the vent.If you want to check the length of dipstick the take the bolt out of the detent cable and pull cable out of transmission while engine is running , when fluid stops coming out the detent cable hole it is at the proper level and you can remark stick if need with a file.I suspect you have a forward clutch problem.I cut my teeth on these transmissions 25 years ago.Good Luck!

Ford focus will not engage gears, it will not shift into reverse or drive...

there could be any number of things causing this problem. start with the easy one, check your tran fluid, you will have to let the car warm up and check it while the car is running. p.s. locate the trans dip stick under the hoodwill be on the side of trans. if the fluid level checks good check you trans shift linkage make sure it is attached properly. you may need to find some one to help you with this. if it is ok your trans filter may need changed. you will have to remove the trans oil pan for this(it can be messy) you may want a shop to do this if you have'nt done it before, next cause could be a computer malfuction with tranny sinsors or you trans bands are wore and need to be replaced.

I have a 94 Saturn SC2 and without warning all of a sudden my car will not shift into reverse, not sure where to put the transmission fluid, help please!!

firstly it may not be just the fluid because if its driving normally in all forward gears it could be a reverse band failure
If you want to try its on one side of the transmission
its a long tube with a dip stick in it used to check the fluid level!
it will need to be in nuetral & at idle in normal operting temperature range with the hand brake firmly applied! b4 you dip it & see
what the level is
to dip it pull it out wipe it cleane then push it all the way back down the tube & pull it straight back out look at where the fluid is on the stick!
if your not sure do it all again till you have a good reading
id suggest that you just drive it to get it checked but dont get blocked if you cant back up!
Cheers Rob

Delay in shift from park to drive or reverse

Check your trans fluid after letting the car run for around 10 minutes or so. Leave the engine running when checking fluid level. If it is low add a little at the time if it is high you are going to need to remove some fluid you can do this with a small sy-fin down the dip stick. Also inspect the fluid and smell it also. If it smells burnt and is brownish or black looking I am sorry to say it may be time to start looking for a new or rebuilt transmission. Good Luck. I hope it is something to do withthe fluid. Let me know what you find.

Front end

Check the fluid level in the trans. With the engine hot, truck idling in park, make sure the fluid reaches the "HOT" range on the trans dip stick and it is bright red and doesn't smell burnt.
