Replacement of timing belt $350-$500. aftermarket shops will try to sell you a package containg a belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley. the dealer will just replace the belt, they might recommend to replace the water pump if there are alot of miles on the car, they will also inspect the pulley for wear.

At what mileage does the timing belt require changing, as per the maintence guide? This is for a 2002 maxda protege 3, auto trans, 5-dr. hatchback.

if your car has more than 100,000 miles then it's advised that you change the timing belt on your car. Good luck

2002 Mazda Protege timing belt replaced and

Scan PCM for codes. Check that timing is correct again. These DOHC engines are easy to install a tooth out. Start from the top of engine when installing timing belt on this type of engine it's the easiest way to do it. If you took CRANKSHAFT pulley apart make sure the pick up ring behind isn't placed in backwards.

Timing Belt replacement- two recomendations by mazda manual

they are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.

As for cost, about $400 is my guess.

Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.
