yeh i have the same problem on my bmw 318ci 2lt 2003 coupe, when i was driving it cut off on me and did not start. after 30mins it started and did the same thing when the engine got hot. i pluged the diagnostic computer and found two faults on the ecu. crank sensor and intake cam sensor.. so i replaced the cam sensor which was quite easy to do, but then when trying to find the crank was difficult. so any ways i managed to locate it but there is not enough space to remove the sensor.does anyone know the correct way of getting to the sensor and what components need replacing to get to this? i have noticed my engine not running right and making loud noise. also its vibrating and does not sound smooth as it use to.. could this be related to the crank sensor?? please some one help me...

Is this the crankshaft or the camshaft sensor

The camshaft sensor is up on the driver side of the valve cover, right next to the oil filter housing. The crankshaft sensor is down by the crankshaft.

After diagnostics on my 2003 bmw 318 coupe, camshaft sensor error showed up to be the car struggles to start and keeps cutting out whilst driving..will replacing the sensor solve this problem?

Hi there,

You are correct...

Your vehicle's ECU relies on data received from the Camshaft sensor, to determine correct engine timing etc etc. It's also important to note that often camshaft sensor errors are closely related to crankshaft sensor problems also.

Recommend you disconnect the the Camshaft Sensor plug and do a test accross the terminals. If the measurements are not to factory specification, replace the sensor then clear the code. If the engine still cuts out, continue to query the diagnostics until problem is solved.

Where is the crankshaft and camshaft sensor located?

Here's some pics of my 2003 Altima Crankshaft Sensor. Often mistaken by the Camshaft Sensor because both are identical sensors. They are each located in different locations. I've seen diagrams with the WRONG labeling. Again, this is so confusing for even a mechanic to understand because both sensors carry the same part number which is rare.

My 2003 nissan altima engine misses and surges and it comes and goes it is a 4 cyl 2.3

Camshaft and crankshaft sensors are common failures on these vehicles and will give you those symptoms. Camshaft sensor is fairly easy to change (right on top on side of head on drivers side)
Crankshaft sensor is buried on backside of engine way down on the bottom.

I just bought a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. The owner said they were driving and it just quit. It still turns over but doesnt fire. There is spark and compression. The timing belt is not broken but is cracking...

Probably needs a crankshaft position sensor. If the belt is cracking a piece of the belt might have damaged the "eye" in the sensor or may be blocking the "eye" ( the timing belt runs right over top of the sensor at the crankshaft). Or it could be one of many other things: bad ecu, bad ignition coils, camshaft position sensor, etc, etc.

Crankshaft and camshaft sensors location in nissan altima 2003

You are incorrect sir. There is a very good Youtube video showing you exactly where it is that is how I changed mine. The Crankshaft is located behind the engine block below and around from the cam sensor which is easly spotted looking at the engine. The crankshaft is in a difficult spot but once you figure out where it is it's easy...ish hope this helps
