Question about 1984 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

What kind of oil?

Just got a 1984 corolla five-door liftback with a 1.6 gas motor and i'm not sure what kind of oil to use. no user manual with vehicle. the car is carbureted, but i'm not sure whether or not that makes a difference in the oil used. also, the car needs a new fuel pump, but there are two pumps used in corolla models of that year: electric and mechanical. any help would be great.

How to change differential oil in an 89 toyota corolla FX-25, 5 door hatchback

Hi Mathew, The 89 Corolla usually has front wheel drive and a combined gearbox and differential. If the box is a manual it uses a 65 w 70 HP oil. If it is automatic it uses ATF in the gearbox which is usually also combined, but some have separate diffs and use the 65 w 70 in the diff section. Regards John

What transmission fluid is best in my "standard

Synthetic 80/90 hypoid works great for freezing/cold climate driving. You may notice it is harder to push the transmission into gear. some times the syncros slip more with synthetic oil slowing down the gear speed/mesh action (a slower-harder shift). If you notice this after the oil change, and do not like the synthetic, it is not that expensive to change it back. If you do a lot of driving below 30 degrees or especially below 0 degrees you may want to try synthetic hypoid. it makes driving in cold weather a breeze (no holding in the clutch for five minutes while the motor warms up).

Sounds like an electrical problem, make sure the ground leads to the engine are good and the battery terminals are clean. It might just be a bad connection in the wiring harness try jiggling the connections to see if it makes the gauges jump when it is running.

Premium. Gas is rated by octane lnumbers and those numbers have stayed the same over the years. Mid gas would not have a high enough octane rating for your engine.
