Question about 1990 Chevrolet S 10 4WD

4wd i have a bad popping noise coming from my 4wd and i need to know if someone knows how to disconnect the 4wd so, i can make it back and have it fixed

Only way to do is disconnect front driveshaft

noise needs HANDS ON testing.
no body here can do that, only wild guessing.
my guess (wild), is a U-joint is horribly bad.
guess 2(wild)
are you in 2wd? does car have AWD options.
is it stuck on 4wd or 4wd lock.
i have no idea what options are on this truck.(drive line)

id say get it checked, as it sound real dangerous to me.

Clicking noise


Hello, You need someone with GM experience for the particular requirements of your drivetrain. Some types are not recommended to be engaged on dry pavement and others are fulltime.
You might try looking at all of your U-joints for signs of rust tracking or grease slinging.
Work your 2WD into 4WD and back several times. Its' possible that the plungers or Solenoids which engage the gears have Varnished up and simply have not retracted completely back into 2WD position.
Do not know if you are in the States, but there are some soft-cover Repair Manuals at autoparts stores which could cover this.

There is a humming noise that I only notice with acceleration and there my low coolant light is on, even though the fluids are fine(I checked in the back up tank and in the radiator cap) I dont understand...


The coolant sensor is most likely bad is the reason you getting the coolant light. It's located inside the overflow tank and it's job is to let you know when the coolant level is low., it's not a big deal just keep a check on the coolant level if you don't get it fixed ant time soon. The humming noise could be different things from a vacuum leak to a pulley issue or even a bad tire, this is a matter of getting someone to drive the car and notice where the humming could be coming from. Do you know if it's coming from the front or back, driver or pass side? Good Luck. Check out about the humming before the sensor.

Silverado wont shift back to 2wd.


What you have to do is go to a service shop and get the codes from the transfer case control module.This will help you find out what is causing the shifting problem.When the technician gets the codes there is a trouble chart that is followed to find the problem.Weather it be a sensor,wiring,switch,or wiring problem.This would be the best way to fix the vehicle other wise you are just throwing parts at it and this can be very costly.Unless you know someone with a scanner and a service manual this would help.Hope this helps.Let me know what you find out.Good luck.

Check vacuum hoses in area where you think it's coming from, for being disconnected or cracked.

Banging noise in 4 wheel drive under torque. front hub questions.


Hello scotch1812, those of us that still enjoy the square headlights have to stick together! The front axle in our YJ's are dana 30 with a high pinion! The high pinion make the ring and pinion spin in a reverse rotation from the dana 30 found in CJ and TJ Jeeps. When Chrysler designed the YJ front axle, they removed the manual hubs like those found in CJ models and installed a vacuum disconnect on the passenger side axle shaft. The passenger side axle shaft is 2 piece with a sleeve that is moved into place to connect the 2 pieces of axle shaft when you shift the transfer case into 4 wheel drive. This is done via a vacuum module mounted on the axle housing. If your module diaphram goes bad you have no 4WD! If your vacuum hose comes off of the module or breaks you have no 4WD. Now when your transfer case is in 2WD the front driveshaft does not turn. The vacuum disconnect allows this to happen. As for the hubs, they are simply hubs with sealed bearings and a universal joint to allow your front wheels to turn left and right. If you hear the banging noise in 2WD it could be a bad universal joint in one of your axle shafts.

Now if you are hearing the banging noise only when you are in 4WD there could be a number of reasons. You could have a broken axle shaft or a bad bearing in your ring and pinion. Your front driveshaft could be bent or at least not straight. I would start with the driveshaft. Just lay under the Jeep (Not running! With emergency brake set!) and spin the front driveshaft. If it spins true and doesn't have an out of round rotation we can rule that out! Also, grab it and push it and pull it to check to see if your universal joints in the drive shaft are gor and tight! They can make a grinding noise or popping noise if they are bad!

Try these and let me know what you find! We will find your problem!

Intermidint cluncking noise from front


That sounds like what may be happening is the "Vacumm Motor" that locks and disconnects the front axle is binding and not engaging all the way. Or possibly the vacumm supply is not sufficient. Trace the vacumm hoses and look for oil contamination or other damage. You may want to hook up a vacumm guage and check the two hoses. One will have vacumm on 4WD engage and the other on 2WD. You should see the same amount both ways.
Make sure that the 4WD engage lite works too. That would be the electrical switch on the front axle. It should turn on a indicator lite on. (I believe all models are equipped with one with that system)
And before you're done you should inspect all the u-joints and drive axle Constant Velocity joints for wear or the presence of rust around the caps. If there is rust around the cap it is probably full of rust instead of grease (bad) It good to check those periodically but those shouldn't be creating you're noise intermittently.

4WD SYSTEM


You probably have an issue with the A.D.D. (Auto Disconnect Device) on the front axle. That is what lights up the light. I'd need to know the year to get you better info. If it is newer, check the 4WD fuse under the dash. But, in any case, if it IS in 4WD, the vehicle will make tire noises on a real tight turn, and it will lurch on the same tight turn, like it is trying to drill itself into the street. 4Runners do not have a viscous coupling, in 4wd, all 4 wheels run the same RPM.
