I live in Northern Ontario & do not require an emissions testing to be done. My System Malfunction dash light has come on (& stayed on 3 times now since May 2012). Twice they have replaced the Evap Filter, but that has not solved the issue. Should I be insisting more is done, or just drive around with that dash light on?
Having grown up in Ont I know you have prov
cert mechanics
So what happened to properly diagnosing the EVAP
System using the codes you have had for months
& using the necessary diagnostic data base to get
the info needed
Are you in some small town where mechanics don't
know much?
You insist what?
When you pay someone their supposed to know how
to resolve the issues
Go to a dealer or different shop.

check the pcv hose at the back of the intake manifold it often leaks and will cause several idle problems

Here's list why your car is coming up with this code. It could be any of these things causing it.
DTC detecting condition:
Possible cause:
SOURCE: evap large leak detected. troubleshoot
the charcoal canister that absorbs the fumes is in engine area-u see a hose attached to it ina corner--inspect hose rite down to the gas tank as well as all parts of system--itz an EPA thing and doesnt effect car performance

Causes: A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
* The gas cap is not installed or working properly
* The purge solenoid has failed
* The canister is plugged and not working properly
Possible Solutions: With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
* Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
* Check and/or replace the sensor
* Check and/or replace the purge valve
* Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks
Hope helps (remember to rate this).

P2015 - Intake manifold runner position
P2008 - Intake manifold runner control circuit
P0456 - Evaporative Emissions System - Small leak detected
None of these are urgent, just annoying. And common problems with Audi's and VW. P2015 and P2008 were likely due to a software/sensor glitch, and did not necessarily require a replacement throttle flap motor. P0456 could be due to loose gas cap, but also was likely caused by carbon contamination from the evap cannister. I have all 3 codes on my 06 passat, and just live with them. I would estimate around 1000k conservatively to track down and fix from dealership.

I am in a small town and the mechanic has not invested in a diagnostic tool thing as he wants to sell his garage & retire. The closest dealership is 2 1/2 hr drive away. H
(sorry) The mechanic feels if I was in Toronto I may need to do more work on the vehicle to pass an emissions test, but not needed up here. I was just curious to know if it could become a problem as I travel alone on Trans Canada where no cell phone coverage several times/yr.
