The key resistor that you installed only bypasses the key and ignition aspects of the security system. The theft deterrent module is still active and is most likely your prpoblem. This link explains.

Thanks, the web site was definitely helpful. After 10 minute reset of the security system the message went off - still did not start. Further testiing revealed power to the starter selenoid but no actuation of the starter. So tomorrow the intake manifold comes off the replace the seemingly faulty starter.

SOURCE: 1997 CADILLAC DEVILLE ENGINE CRANKS BUT WILL NOT

On the key there is a diode theat the key connects inside the cylinder lock from the lock cyclinder their is two white wires that thread down the collum to the maim collum connector.here they plug into the main harness. If this white set of wires is broken or cut anywhere or connected to ground then the security system won't let the car start. A new tumber comes with the white wires and the contacts that touch the key. I remove the new contact wire assembly from the old tumbler and install the new on that came with the new tumbler. I don't use the new tumber as I don't have a key with the diode in it thats right for the car. with the old key in the old tumbler with the new wire and contaacts all assembled the car should reconize the key and run like it used to,

SOURCE: Turn on the ignition key

The reset is'nt possible it's problem to get get. Your key has a (chip) it it it's realy a diode that has a certain resistance. The key lock has contacts in it that touch this diode and relay this resistance to the computer and then it's happly and let's the car start. Most of the time the contes are Okay but you should check before you go into the next thing to check. looking into the lock where the key enters and start to insert the key and you can see the contacs tring to touch the key. if their bent or way off the key with a small bent pick you can bend the contacs so they'll pust on the key more, don't get carried away as too much and the tip of the key will bend it all the way out of the way. If this does'nt seem to be a problem the next step is to verify that the key is being read and you first need to read the key it's self with an OHM meter. It'll be 100 OHMs or 200 and so on. then find the same wires art the floor board as the wiring comes out of the steering collum. There's a big electrical connector near the base of the steering collum with a bolt in the middle holding it plugged in. On the outsides of this plug are a piggybacked plug on both sides of the main plug in on of these piggyback plugs coning from the steering collum are going to be two white wires all the way to one end of the piggy back pulg and their very thin and right next to each other, these are the wires that should be the key if it's connected. with this plug unplugged and the key all the way into the lock these two wires shoul read the same as the reading you got when you read the key itself earlier. if it does read the same your in troble bad as the computer has locked you out and a GM dealer will have to connect you to thier interface to unlock your car. This is not likly to be the case as the wire that we're testing is more likly to be broken the right way and an altentive( cheaper) way is possible you can go to the store and but a lock and key cyclinder for your car
169328899.jpg This wire connector on the lock cyclinder you can put your key in this lock you just bought and connect the wires where the white ones in the plug were and use a spare key to turn your old lock and the security will read your key as it's connected now and you can turn the lock in the collum and it'll start and run. or you can fix it right. If you have the tools and skills. ( you can rent some of the uncomon tools at the parts store that your buying the new lock cyclinder. You need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate depresser. you also need the tools like picks and skill to use the lock plate depressr. Once the lock plate is out then you can remove the torx headed bolt ytheat holds the lock cyclinder in and remove it. I connecte a wire ( coathanger to the old wire before I pull it out of the collum so the new wire can but pulled back in to the same place were the old wire was ( it needs to be). If the old lock was working smoothly I just remove the contac ring from both the new lock and the old one and put the contacs and the wire on the old lock then re assemble it and it will work with your old key and will have the new wire. be careful to rount the new wire the same as the old on with just enough slack as you turn the key as it'll break the new one if it's too tight or if theirs too much slack in the wire it'll hang in the lock plate and get cut by it. I f you need to use the new lock and key you'll need to get the new key copied and a key cutter with the same diode resistance and alot of key cutters don't do this work or charge alot of money to do it . The dealers charge about $500 to do this work. Repairing the wire does'nt last very long as it brole as it flexes as you turn the key right where it breaks and the repair will break even eaisier.

97 Monte Carlo security system

The theft deterrent module probably isn't energizing the theft deterrent relay . Most of the problems with this anti-theft system is that the contacts inside the ignition key lock cylinder wear out an can't read the resistor pellet on the key or the wires on the back of the key lock cylinder break . This all mean the key lock cylinder probably needs to be replaced .Or you can do a by pass !

89 firebird anti theft code won't let car start

If code 53 involves the PASS system for your car, the chip in the key has failed, or the sensor in the lock cylinder, or the control module.
The anti-theft system disables the starter and the fuel injectors. You could bypass those circuits to get the car started.

1991 buick park avenue

Anti-theft system problem . Do you have a SECURITY light on the instrument cluster that is on or flashing when trying to start the vehicle ? Is there a resistor pellet on the key ? The problem with these anti-theft systems is the contacts inside the ignition lock cylinder wear an can't read the resistance of the resistor pellet on the side of the key . You can find videos on youtube on by-pass this part of it . It's called VATS - vehicle anti-theft system . To do this by-pass measure the resistor value with a ohm meter . Buy resistors at radio shack to equal that an then find the wires under the dash on or around the steering column an solder the resistors to the wires . Check out a few different videos on youtube .

Need to bybass security system to start car on 1992 cadillac sedan deville

Hello: To by-pass the security system you need to do the following; Take your key to radio shack have a knowledgeable sales person read the Resistance value of the resistor in your key(ignition) and sell you a resistor of that value. Under the drivers side dash there is a large electrical connector near the park brake assembly with two smaller connectors on each side. One of the smaller has two small white wires on one end. (these are the wires that come from the lock cylinder of the key cylinder) Wire the resistor in to these wires going to the connector (front of the car) NOT TO THE WIRES GOING TO THE STEERING COLUMN. This will allow the car to start asnd run but you will NOT have the protection of the anti theft of the system.

I have a 1999 Olds Aurora. It ocasionally will not start. There is no problem with the battery or starter. When you turn the key the dash lights up but nothing happens. Its as if the ignition switch...

does the DIC say "Clean Key - Wait 3 Minutes"? If so, your PASS-Key II anti theft system is starting to act up. I had the same problem in my 99 Aurora for years, until I bypassed the key resistor with a resistor pack. Google "PASS-Key II Bypass" and you should find others with the same issue. Check this link out. http://vats.likeabigdog.com/
I went to RadioShack, bought a package of different resistors for ~$10, used an ohmmeter to measure the key resistor (they differ from car to car) and then made a resistor "pack" to mimic the key resistor. Now the tricky part is that you have to take off the dash panel under the steering wheel, cut the resistor sensor wires from the ignition switch, and then solder the resistor pack in between the cut wires. Basically you're fooling the system that the key is in the ignition. It hasn't been completely fool proof (when the car is really hot in the summer, sometimes I still have the same problem - may need more temperature stable resistors), but it has been SO MUCH better than before I did the bypass.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

The starting disabled due to anti -theft system malfunction . dash monitor reads a key problem- how can I start the car

there isnt much you can do about that problem, u need to have ur key reprogrammed or maybe even replace the "chip" or "resistor" that works with a signal emitter placed inside your streering column, that signal emmiter communicates with your ecm and allows it to start the car, since its a safety feature it is no possible to go without it.
hope this help

I have a 97 caddy on dash a message enable to start due to auto

have you tried to get your key looked at??
maybe the resistor on it is no good anymore,
or maybe the wires for this system are damaged,
they are two skinny white wires inside an orange sleeve
(that's how it is on my 97 deville)
