Power steering pump replacement

Mechanic wants to charge me $350 (parts + labor) for power steering pump replacement. I'm capable of doing this myself, but I'm intimidated by the compactness of the engine compartment. Can someone provide pointers on how to remove the PS pump? Any pictures would be awesome! Thanks!

SOURCE: replace power steering pump and lines 1992 cadillac seville sts

you need to have a pulley puller to get the pulley off if you don't have one most auto zone part stores have a loan a tool program and they can help you with that on most powersteering pumps the high pressure line will be a fitting or bolt on and the return line is usually just a squeeze clamp hope this helps good luck

You should have also lost your power steering because the steering is variable assist based on vehicle speed as well as your cruise control. Your electronic brake control traction module (EBCTM) is gone on the ABS module; very common catera problem and guaranteed to be your problem. It is mounted on the anti lock brake pump (aluminum block) where all the brake lines convene, left side of engine (right side from the front), behind and below the battery. It has two harnesses connected to it (make sure you remove the clips and retainers to release the connectors without breaking them) and 5 torx screws holding it in. You will need a varied tool small kit and torx drivers, tips, extensions, drivers whatever will get you to the party and let you take it out. There are 5 screws, you need to find them all and don't force it. Make sure all 5 are removed, they are all the same and have torx heads, I think an M6 torx driver if I remember correctly . You will also need a magnet to pick up the screws and tips you drop down the area. I took the rad hose off and the battery out to access it. Don't remove the ABS pump! The module is a pain to get in and out. There are places in the US that will send you a rebuilt one or rebuild yours with a full warranty for about $150 turnaround is fairly quick and this module fixes all your problems. I bought one from a wrecker for 25 and has been fine ever since. TC ABS light went off, power steering returned, speedo /odometer came back, ABS working fine and cruise is perfect again. To make your life easier and not have to get the computer to relearn from disconnecting the battery, I fed the car battery power through the cigarette lighter to maintain radio, computer settings before I disconnected the battery. Minimizes the work after you are done or you will have do the idle position relearn and so on. Let me know how you make out and I can be of any more help.

SOURCE: GETING CODES po452 & po301

  • P0452 Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Low Input
  • P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

  • You can get additional information from:

Depending on your car model, year, and engine, The P0301 code could be a bad plug, wire, coil, or vacuum leak.

The P0452 Evap system codes can be very difficult to diagnose.

If you re-ask the question with the specific car info, maybe someone can tell you which parts are most likely to be bad.

Fixing power steering leaks in 2005 Toyota Highlander

    The lines. you have 2.
high pressure and low pressure. combined, they cost around $400 at dealers but can be found cheaper online.
labor at a shop to replace both lines calls for 2.3 hours, so you will pay their cost per hour of labor.
plus shop fees and tax. (fees cover shop supplies like fluid, gloves, etc)
If the problem is the power steering pump itself, the average cost at shops for the part is $450 (part only) plus 1.6 hours of labor.

if the issue is the steering rack itself, you can find that part online for $350 on average.
If you just let the shop order the steering rack, they may hit you for $1,200-$1,400 just for the part, and labor times for that job is 4.2 hours.

Please note, the link I have attached may notbe the correct part for your toyota. You would have to search for the correct vehicle.
include engine size and other required info like "Toyota camry LE, 2.5L, front wheel drive"
    Hope this helps.

How many hours to replace a power steering pump?

Since he replace the reservoir, most likely it is the pump. These pumps have fiberboard vanes, so don't worry about replacing the rack. I don't know about your car, but if the pump is on top, labor is about an hour. If it on bottom, look at about 3 hours. I have done some that have taken every bit of 3 hours, all the parts that have to removed or dropping the frame. Don't get me wrong, I have worked on plenty of Volvo,s. But I work on everything and just do the job.

Power steering fluid drained out all at once. Hose is good. Mechanic says power steering rack is cracked. How much to fix.

The parts that need to be replaced is the whole power steering component that actually turn the wheels.Don't let him temp repair it...that's a waste of money. Make sure there is a wheel alignment done after the parts are replaced

My 2003 ford focus lost it's power steering, mechanic replaced the rack and pinion thing - lost steering again and now the mechanic says it is the power steering pump. The rack and pinion was replaced...

if the rack and pinion was not leaking or causing problems. then he may of made a wrong move! if the rack was fine before, and you just lost power steering. then it is most likely the power steering pump or the lines that go from rack to the pump. good-day ! if a rack goes bad, you will get a bad steering problem or just bad steering.

I have a cracked power steering line. I was wondering if the fluid completely leaks out, what will go wrong and can I still drive it for a few days until I can get the line replaced??

If you let your power steering pump run dry, you will cause at least a $1000 dollars in damage, you will burn up the Rack & Pinion which costs about $300-400 inn parts plus you will the damage the Power Steering Pump which is about $150-$200 dollars plus the labor to replace both parts and when you remove and replace a Rack and Pinion you will have to get your Front -End Alignment re-done. All that money to replace a $50 dollar hose plus labor. if you are mechanically inclined you can replace the hose yourself. It's all up to you, don't be "Penny Wise and Dollar Foolish".

What are the risks of driving 2006 chevrolet malibu that has NO POWER STEERING....also what is cost of having this defect fixed. Thank You

The steering is extremely heavy if the power steering has failed and it is VERY DANGEROUS to attempt to drive the car in this condition. The car was not designed to be steered without the power assistance. You should not attempt it and the vehicle is NOT roadworthy. You will impair your insurance coverage if you knowingly drive the vehicle in this condition and expose yourself to criminal charges if you injure anyone.

The cost of repair depends entirely on the nature of the fault, the parts prices and labor rates charged at different workshops. If the problem is a result of a leaking/damaged power steering hose that needs replacing the costs will be moderate. If the power steering pump has failed and needs replacing it will be more expensive in labor and parts.

You need to find a competent mechanic familiar with Chevs and have the car towed to his premises for repair. The car needs to be put on a hoist to be properly inspected and repaired competently.

Alternatively you could try one of the mobile auto repair services if you have one operating in your area.
