These are teh most common used wires for 1975-2006 mercury cars. I would double check them though.

Constat 12V - Light Green
Switched 12V - Yellow/Black
Groudn - Black
Remote Amplifier turn-on -Blue
Illumination -Light Blue/Red

Front/Right+ -Dark Green/Orange
Front/Right- -White/light Green
Front/Left + -Orange/Light Green
Front/left - -Light Blue/White
Rear/right+ -Orange/Red
Rear/right- -Brown/pink
Rear/left+ -Gray/Light Blue
Rear/left- -Tan/Yellow

Always test to make sure u got the right wire. Use a AA batter to test which wires are the speakers. put the + & - of the battery to the + & - of the speaker. u should hear the speaker crackle.

Good Luck

Had a new altanater put on and now the radio won't come on checked the fuse and its still good 1999 mercury cougar

If it is a factory radio, you may need to enter an anti-theft code. If it is an aftermarket radio, they tend to pinch or fry wiring in the area around the dash, and it may be unrelated to the replacement of the alternator

On the power wire to your radio is an inline fuse. Have you checked that?

This sounds much like a fuse problem. I would definitely start with the fuses, check to make sure they are ALL in good condition and replace as necessary.
Secondly, make sure your grounds are good. Battery grounds, wiring harness grounds, etc.

1993 mercury cougar radio blows when insalled pleeeeze help

Some vehicles will not support aftermarket radios. The original radio wiring supports some functions of the vehicle, example being an alarm, interior lights, etc. It is possible one of the circuits has a blown fuse, and the radio is not compatible with your car.

Speakers went out

First, hotwire any working speaker to one that is out...If that speaker works, then replace the bad one. If the known good one does not work, you need to check wiring and radio itself.
