Check to see if you have a detent cable on the throttle, this indictes a 700R4/DM-8 trans, according to the year of your truck and you said it was a 4 spd auto, this is the one.
check this info out www.tvmadeez.com/tvinstadj.php
This is great info, need to pressure check trans to properly set up trans. for long life, check it out

Your truck was equipped with a turbo 400. Look at pan and shape to determine trans. Square will be 700R4 , long to the rear will be 4L80E but this trans. requires computer.

My 1999 chevy blazer wont shift out of low

My husband had the same problem with his 1988 S10 Blazer. We drained the tranny, cleaned out the pan and put in a new filter etc. Filled with new fluid and all problems solved. Shifts better now then before the tranny service.

Need transmission info for 1988 Chevy Silverado 454 C3500 dually

got a clutch pedal in there? If auto, it could be a 700r4 or some variation of that. You can likely get exact info from a dealer if you give them the vin #.

Im not sure what type of transmission I can put in this Chevy.

Or you can go to an auto wrecker and get a good used one for a lot less. And it'll be just as good or better than a rebuilt. Just pull the dipstick out and make sure the oil is clean and doesn't smell burnt. And check the mileage of the vehicle it's coming out of. Never be afraid of used parts. You drive to the parts store on them!

1988 Chevy 1500 will not shift into any gear

It appears to me that the transmission is slipping. It may be as simple as low fluid or it may be burned up. Check the fluid level, and note the color and smell. Good fluid will be red in color, if it's bad it'll be very dark and have a burnt smell. The internal clutches and band friction materials can eventually wear out and the trans will need to be rebuilt or replaced. I hope this helps
