The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

Make sure fluid level not low.because most time when you change transmission fluid and filter some times you could still be a half or quart low check transmission fluid level.

SOURCE: when does one engage the ''L'' gear when driving a mitsubishi rvr c

the L gear is Gear # 1 and likewise 2 is second gear, you utilise this in case you are going down on a slop especially icy or snow condition all it does is runs just on 1 or 2 respectively without changing whichh gieves more traction on the road.

dose the car have a o/d button

if so it sounds like the end clutch has died in the auto and you will need to go to a auto specialist.

I have a 1998 Mitsubishi 4g64 RVR starting ok put into gear R D it wont move could it be the computer or shift solenoid problem the is clean no burn smell .

Even if you disconnect the transmission from the computer it would still move but not shift. Sorry but it sounds like you have a failed tranny. have a local shop do further diagnosis. this is a very expensive repair, about $4000.00 US

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.
