There is a electronic sensor on the front axle that could be bad or the sensor on the transfer case is bad and not sending the mesage to the front axle that it is locking in.

4 wheel drive will not switch from 4 high 4x4 to 2 wheel drive

on dirt? off road or on the road (pavement)

on ice?

do say what the tires are touching. we cant see you drive.

this car has parttime 4wd, its not AWD nor full time 4wd.

sorry, its PT. and the rules for PT always apply.

Part time is not for dry ice free pavement, at all.

if you do this, it winds up the drive line and causes the gears to lock. and worse.

the lost operators guide explained all that.

and needs to back up to unlock the front axle locks.

one more pain.

4WD S model, which used manual hubs, get out and turn dial.

so if doing all this wrong, on dry ice free pavement???

move car to shoulder that has dirt ./sand or gravel on 1 or 2 right wheels, then shift out of 4wd to 2H

or damage the transfer case you will.

like this guy did.

turn steering only slightly off center to get to curb, or it gets worse.

symptoms of bad drivers.....using 4wd, PT.

steers gard

funny sounds (of death)

gears lock up in transfer case or even in the manual trans.

or far worse.

99 Ford F-150 won't go into 4wheel drive I looked undernieth and front drive shaft is not turning

Someone will have to go under and check the linkage is working when the 4 wheel drive is fully engaged and not just moved to a neutral position.

97 chevy 4x4 not working

Sorry no idea here without as look to see whats wrong ,could very well be a electric solonoid switch that locks up a dog clutch but 4x4 is not something i do very often .Most i see are permanant 4x4 isnt this truck permanant rear wheel drive anyway and you lock in the front diff by means of a solonoid or a cable

Front wheels not turning in 4wheel drive 1996 dodge dakota

Check and make sure the transfer case is adjusted right If the front end was broke you would know it. Jack up one front wheel and put it in 4wheel drive but not lock and see if the front drive shaft turns if it doesn't you need to adjust linkage or if it's electric make sure the signal is getting to the transfer case. If it only locks front and rear jack up one rear wheel also and do the check. Most people with 4 wheel drive don't know they have two wheel drive One in the rear and one in the front unless you ordered a locking dif from the factory they don't come this way. Then you would have 3 wheel drive

Vibration sound that comes and goes but stops when 4H button is pressed

Depends on the sound. But if you have manual locking hubs, and are leaving them on, that is bad. That would explain the noise because the wheels would be rotating the front drive shaft unnecessarily.
So make sure the front hubs are unlocked, if they are manual.
If the hubs are not manual, then I would suggest checking the transfer case oil level, checking Ujoints for looseness, and check the wheel bearings.

My 89 chevy s-10 pickup 4 wheel drive doesnt work. the transfer case goes into gear but the front hubs seem like they dont lock in i was told it was a fuse or a vaccuum line but i have never heard of...

On the 1989 s10 it has a vacuum actuator that actually locks the front differential in ,you need to check that first, those go bad real often, and without it. There's no way it will lock in the axle, the transfer case will lock in ,but the front differential uses a actuator. It 's located under the battery tray and there is a cable towards the front of the differential. Id say the actuator cable has gone out, most parts stores can get you one ,that what goes wrong with those 99% of the time and it only takes about 5 minutes to change it out. Good luck but check the vacuum line to the actuator under the battery tray.

Transfer Case not locking in

you need to take it to a garage ,put it on a hoist , start it up ,put it in drive ,put it in 4x4 and see if front drive shaft spins,if it is and the front wheels are not it is most likely the plastic thing on the passenger side of the front axle. This is what locks in the front axle to the drive shaft. If the drive shaft isnt spinning then it is a problem with the transfer case.
