SOURCE: Everything works electric wise, so

Everything works so it's not the battery huh? You'd better have the battery over to a shop that can test it under load before spending any more time or money. A friend of mine asked me to fix his car's starting problem that sounds just like yours. Before I started troubleshooting he said, "I just replaced the battery a couple of months ago so I know it's good." Well, he buys a starter and I put it in. Same problem. I take the battery back to Checkers, they test it and it fails. They give a new battery and tadaaaa, problem fixed. Too bad they wouldn't take the starter back though. They would have had I not cranked the engine. New batteries can be defective too. Don't take shortcuts.

SOURCE: 1999 ford taurus starter will not engage

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my knowledge, you assumption is correct on most designs. That wire should go to the ignition switch and will be hot when key is in START. However, same wire often would be connected first to a relay that is interlocked with some conditions/status other then key to START. They would be:

  • automatic transmission should be in neutral/park with light indicated;
  • alarm/security/immobilizer is inactive/OFF.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

I have the same problem. I am half way through. I removed the starter but don't think that is it. The van always starts when jumped. The driving lights, clock, and radio work even though the key is not in the ignition. Something must not be disengaging and drains the battery in a few hours as if the key is on!!

Try the idle air control valve since it raises the idle when you turn on a load to the engine.

I have a 97 ford escort changed the battery and starter and all I get is a click. The engine doesn't turn. Could some one help

Just to be safe always check the obvious, make sure you can rotate the engine over with a socket/ratchet to be sure it is not seized, then check to be sure the hot wire to the solenoid ( big wire to stud on solenoid) has battery power with key in run position, check for battery power on the starter solenoid (small wire to activate solenoid) with the key turned to start the vehicle, , there should be power at the solenoid to engage the starter motor, if no power on the large wire trace back to find fault, same for the solenoid power from key, but from your statement of a click when trying to start sounds like solenoid is engaging . so either the power to the starter from battery seems to be open or to low voltage getting to starter from corroded wires, or the engine could be seized.

I pulled the starter relay while f350 was running and it died and wont start unless I arc across cylenoid

well a couple of things, the Fords use the big old external solenoid most likely on yours, you did not mention the year. It will have 4 or 3 wires, if it has 3 then the small wire is from the key switch, if it has 4 the 2 small wires are either 12+ from key and ground or 12+ from the key and the other goes to the coil, since you have an F350 is it a diesel or gas, because there is a glow plug relay also. Need more info !!! You can apply 12 vdc directly to the starter wire from key and see if relay clicks.

Pickup will not start. have new battery still nothing is there a fuse or relay to start motor

if it cranks over-it may be an ignition system fault/ if you turn the key and nothing happens at all with a good battery-it may be a bad starter motor-the starter motor has a very small wire connection not like the big fat starter motor battery connection-it is small and comes from the ignition switch - just apply 12 volts from the battery to that connector terminal and the motor will crank-key off it will not start-turn key to ignition on- it will start, so be in park and block the wheels and do not make a mistake

My 2000 ford expoler 4.0 dohc won't start fuel pump won't come on mabe my anti-theft how do i check that

Drop the tank and on top of the tank where the wires go is a special sort of electrical gizmo that will not allow the pump to work unless it gets the right frequency signal so just bypass it and run the wires direct onto the fuel pump --sorted--

I have a 1969 mustang 302 v8 auto, i installed a different starter with 3 terminal, a pos, a lead, and one already fixed on the starter.... i connected the pos and 2 bolts..nothing happens, it clicks the...

the older fords used a remote solinoid. the big terminal is a power all the time. the small one is the energizer and only gets hot when the key is in the start position. the third one that goes to the starter motor its self turns the motor. on the old solinoid on the fender you should find a small wire hooked to it hat only gets hot when you turn the key to start.lenghten it and attach to the small terminal on the starter. i would however see if you cant get the correct starter first, for it in my opinoin is the better system

95 jeep cherokee not starting

Check the small wire on the starter to see if you are getting 12v there with the key turned. If you are, then it is possible that the starter (&or solenoid) that checked out good last year is not good now. If no power at small wire, then check neutral safety switch.
