I think the shifter switch is working but still no fire to the small wire on the starter

Everything works so it's not the battery huh? You'd better have the battery over to a shop that can test it under load before spending any more time or money. A friend of mine asked me to fix his car's starting problem that sounds just like yours. Before I started troubleshooting he said, "I just replaced the battery a couple of months ago so I know it's good." Well, he buys a starter and I put it in. Same problem. I take the battery back to Checkers, they test it and it fails. They give a new battery and tadaaaa, problem fixed. Too bad they wouldn't take the starter back though. They would have had I not cranked the engine. New batteries can be defective too. Don't take shortcuts.

To my knowledge, you assumption is correct on most designs. That wire should go to the ignition switch and will be hot when key is in START. However, same wire often would be connected first to a relay that is interlocked with some conditions/status other then key to START. They would be:

I have the same problem. I am half way through. I removed the starter but don't think that is it. The van always starts when jumped. The driving lights, clock, and radio work even though the key is not in the ignition. Something must not be disengaging and drains the battery in a few hours as if the key is on!!

Try the idle air control valve since it raises the idle when you turn on a load to the engine.
