Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an important component for the proper function of your 2004 VW Beetle Convertible Turbo's transmission. Here are the steps to check and add ATF fluid:
Locate the transmission dipstick. It is typically located near the back of the engine on the driver's side.
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
Re-insert the dipstick fully and remove it again to check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
If the fluid level is low, add fluid through the dipstick tube. It is recommended to use the same type of fluid specified by the manufacturer, Volkswagen G 052 162 A2 or Volkswagen G 052 990 A2.
Repeat the process of checking and adding fluid until the fluid level is between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
Run the engine for a few minutes and recheck the fluid level to make sure that it is correct.
If the coolant level is the problem, the engine would be getting hot. If it is getting hot, add coolant and check for leaks. Use your owners manual maintenance chapter.
if the engine is not getting hot, the thermostat is stuck open. If your husband cannot find the thermostat by himself, I recommend you go to a shop. You have to be a good mechanic to replace a thermostat properly.
There would be a round (ball shaped) white/beige plastic reservoir at the passenger side of the engine compartment. Only fill with VW pink coolant and nothing else. There would be a marker around the middle part of it for correct level.
