Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

2000 Nissan Maxima sounds like its not shifting into 3rd gear

125,000 miles automatic, sounds like it needs to shift into a higher gear - is very loud. RPMs show no higher than the 2 on the dial.

Thank you for your response! its like a loud whirring - or revving. Like it needs to shift but cant. Her solution has been to turn up the radio! So how do we check this nechanical fan clutch?

thanks - we'll take a look at everything you suggested. Appreciate the response - we're just a couple of females trying to take care of a pretty decent car.

What do you mean by loud... Loud where??? If noise is from engine, make sure that the mechanical fan clutch is not "locked" (it's supposed to freewheel when cold... if it does not, it will "roar" when driving.

Ok, first, If you have a fan clutch it is mounted on the water pump and is belt driven, not electric. (You may not have one... I was thinking of another vehicle when I wrote that) If you do have one, the easiest way to check it is that when hot, there should be more resistence to turning it by hand than there was when it was cold. Also, with the hood open, engine running you can actually hear it when you bring rpm's up. Back to your problem... Is fluid in trans full & clean? does it have a burnt smell or is it very brown instead of red? Can you hear all gear shifts coming in at appropriate times? how about when manually shifting through gears? Is it going into overdrive if equipped? If any of those problems exist there is an internal trans problem, and unit needs service or rebuild.

Funny thing about cars... They don't know if your'e a female or male at the other end of a wrench. Therefore, JUST females really dosen't matter. As an ex drag racer, some of the toughest competitors I came up against were wimmens!!! (better reaction times). I have come to believe that cars can hear and have feelings though... Never even think about replacing your vehicle while you are driving, especially on long trips.(far away from home or help). If you do, it will retalliate, and leave you stranded. (and though you can't hear it, the car will be laughing at you!!! Hope your problem turns out to be a small one!
    Happy New Year!!!

My 2000 daewoo nebria jerks to the left when the automatic transmission changes into 3rd gear. it's kinka spooky. where do i need to start looking for the solution? Don Frasier

I would start with your trans, 3rd gear is much higher the 1 and 2 and if it only jerks in 3 the problem is a tranny issue, possibly late shifting or bad shift solenoid for 3rd gear. Your ecu could also be casueing the late shifts.....hows your fluid level/age

Automatic transmiddon will not shift out of third gear.

Does it shift normally in drive and just won't go into overdrive, (4th gear), or is it hung up in 3rd from a dead stop?

Tranny wont shift into third gear.

you have to pull down the oil pan of the tranny. then take out the strainer inside attached to the tranny. dirt is clogging it making the sometimes shift and other not.
