if you replace the alternator im sure it will be fine while your driving the battery is not getting charged so thats the only thing that it could be
SOURCE: How do you check if altenator is charging battery,
Most vehicles if you get the car running and unhook the positive battery cable it will stay running that is because it is running off the alternator. if it dies like your talking about I would most definitely say your alternator needs to be replaced. Most likely when you jumped your father in laws pick up there was a bad ground somewhere and your alternator got a surge of electricity and it fried it. Hope this helps.

a solution could be that in tank fuel pumps are electric and the tank selection switch not only sees to it that the lines are switched but the power to the pumps as well. So a lack of fuel means that you have to check the complete fuel delivery system. That means the fuses, the switch, the wiring, and the pumps. Also, make sure your fuel filter is not clogged.

check the charging system...if the alternator is not charging right then you can have that problem...
SOURCE: the car won't start; lights,
Check the starter and the starter relay or fuse. A client of mines car was doing the same thing, it ended up being two issues, the starter not working anymore, and a relay that was bad. If I am not mistaken everything should be labeled in the fuse box under the hood and will tell you where the fuse/ relay is for your vehicle
