there may be a filter mounting block that attaches to the engine and has its own gasket - or there may be another oil filter seal that stuck from the last filter replacement.....known as "double gasketed" it will leak

SOURCE: 2003 ford taurus smell antifreeze burning &

probably not. put aluminum seal in the cooling system and top off antifreeze. you may need a hose or fitting from where you are decribing the leak. if the leak stops with the sealant you are good to go. otherwise take it to a shop and they will tell you. do not tell them you think it is a head gasket.

Why would i be smelling burning oil from my car

Check to see if the oil cap is on correctly. Take the oil cap off and put it back on. If you just put some oil in your vehicle some of the oil may have spilled onto the engine and will burn off unless you clean the oil off the top of the engine. It could be a valve cover leak. Look under the car for an oil leak on the ground and if you see fresh oil then take to your mechanic.

Why does my van have a burning smell when I go up hills?

You may have a minor oil leak and not see any dripping on the ground. The van is under load going up hills and will run slightly hotter. If there is oil leaking in or around the exhaust manifold it will give a burning smell.

I have a 1998 ford explorer it will start and when you put it in gear and accelerate the gas it barely moves if any at all .can't drive it no were and it smells like oil is in the transmission fluid what...

Look underneath. Is there trans oil leaking? Its red and thin so should be dripping easily.
Is the trans correctly filled? Low oil will prevent it moving. Check trans oil with engine running. Should be near high mark.
Is the smell oil? Or are the brakes jammed on?

Burning smell

Check the valve covers for small leaks, the oil will run down onto the exhaust manifold and this causes the burning smell. Oil leaks on this model and engine is a very common issue.

My 1998 ford explorer transmission will not go into overdrive and makes a chatter sound when put into reverse.

Cheap way to go is tho change the filter and that will tell you if you have metal in the pan, if you do gears are bad or smell the oil, if it smell burn or looks darker than what it should be

I have a 1994 toyota estima petrol it smells like a oil burning smell but theres no oil on the ground when i turn it off?

Hi Kiwi, Have a look for oil leaking onto the exhaust system, particularly onto the exhaust manifold. I'm fairly sure that you'll spot something from there. Regards John

Slight oil drop on ground every day. nickel size. Just had the oil changed a week ago. mine is a 2002 highlander

Make sure the drain bolt is tight and filter is tight first then look for your self and see If the value cover has oil around it if so it is the covers if not it could be your seals

Transmission is slipping when i first take off and when i turn.is that a u joint problem?

If you're sure the transmission is slipping then it's not a universal joint causing it.

Classic test for loose universal joint in driveshaft: you'll feel the car vibrate, vibration will increase with speed. Getting on and off the throttle when you moving will cause the vibration to change- might get better, might get worse but it'll change each time you let off the throttle and then push it again.

Are you sure the transmission is slipping? If you feel that it is then the first thing to do is check the transmission oil. If it's low then top it up, that may solve the problem. Smell it, if the transmission is slipping it'll have a burned smell and will be other than nice bright red in color. If it's slipping you'll also see dark matter in suspension in the oil and the oil color will range from dark red to black.

If it's definitely slipping but the oil isn't too black yet you can sometimes get more use from it by putting a thick transmission goop in it- be sure the transmission is warm when you pour it in and drive it a few miles to give the goop a chance to mix in well.
