Question about 1989 Honda CRX

Changed head gasket on 1.5 put #1 piston at TDC and positioned distributor rotor to #1 plug on cap and car wont start. does this sound like a timing problem or ignition problem. Someone mentioned the crank positioning sensor but dont know where exactly it is located at. can you please help?

Sounds like you have the distributor timing 180* out.
Remove the distributor and turn engine 360* and reinsert distributor.

I put new head gaskets on my 93 Chevy ck1500 5.7,put it back together the TB is shooting flames,I know the timing is off where do I go from here,wont start


Set cylinder 1 to TDC on compression stroke, remove distributor and reset to stock marks. Generally there are timing marks for this. If you cannot locate the timing marks then note the direction that the rotor under the distributor cap rotates and reinstall it so it's pointing right at the cylinder 1 contact or just barely before when cylinder 1 is at TDC. That may get you close enough to start it. Then you will need a timing light to adjust the timing to the proper spec.

In the future mark the distributor cap and housing position relative to manifold or block prior to removal. Makes re-assembly a breeze.

How do I find the timing marks on a 1992 voyager


Sounds like you replaced the distributor without setting #1 at TDC? The distributor cap should indicate which plug is the #1 plug wire. If there are no inspection plugs you can pop out to see the timing marks on the camshaft gears you will need to disable the starting system (fuel flow) remove #1 plug and turn it over until #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Then insert the distributor cap with the rotor on it, taking note of where the #1 plug tower is on the cap. Once the dist is installed place the cap on and make sure the end of the rotor is aligned with the #1 tower inside, if it is your good to go. If not take the dist out and turn it a bit left or right then put it in again until it lines up correctly (may take a few tries). Once aligned secure everything, replace spark plug and it should fire up.

With the engine at #1 TDC your rotor bug should be pointing at your #1 plug wire.

Reset timing on chain for 85 olds cutlass


I used to have one of these...there are 2 top dead centre positions you have to watch for. Top Dead Centre "Compression" and Top Dead Centre "Exhaust".

With the distributor cap on, you will know where number 1 is on the distributer, remove the distributor cap and then turn the motor using the crank...keep turning until you see the rotor pointing to number 1. If the number 1 piston is at TDC then you are good to go with it being at TDC Compression- rotor at 1.
If your rotor is at number 1 but your number 1 piston is down then you need to remove the distributor from the rotor 180 degrees then slide the distributor back into the block carefully...remembering to be careful because your oil pump is run by a shaft which snaps onto the bottom of the distributor.

Replaced old distributor with new "OE" distributor, but failed to mark old rotor position. I know to find #1 cylinder - do I aim rotor at #1 position when TDC is located?


you need to make sure you are on the compression stroke when the piston comes up to TDC for cylinder #1. Most times you can just feel the compression with your finger over the spark plug hole. After determining the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke, note the position of the #1 spark plug lead on the distributor cap. You will need to line up the rotor with the terminal inside the cap for #1.

Chevy k1500 5.7 v8 wont start


Sounds like your timing is off when you placed the distributor back in or your spark plug wires are crossed. Start with the simple and check the spark plug wire firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Cylinder numbers drivers side 1-3-5-7 radiator to firewall. Cylinder numbers passenger side 2-4-6-8 radiator to firewall. Distributor cap #1 is at 5 O'clock and rotates clock wise. Once that is establish to be good then make sure the cylinder 1 is at TDC with the distributor rotor at the #1 position. Good luck and hope it's a crossed firing order.

How do I set the distributor on a 2000 gmc jimmy? Just changed the intake gaskets, but forgot to mark the position of the rotor.


Get the number one piston up, Take the spark plug out the first one on the drivers side.Rotate the engine until the piston reaches TDC before it starts to decend back. U can use a screw driver to put in the spark plug hole.The rotor must point towards the number one spark plug. your local library will have this infor or autozone

Removed distributor to change head gasket, now timing is way off


If the timing chain is still in the correct position its an easy fix. Put screwdriver down spark plug hole #1 and rotate the engine over by hand until you reach TDC e.g. piston fully up. Now your either on the start of the ignition/power stroke or at the end of the exhaust stroke. Im not sure of the firing order of your specific engine but basicly this means that the engine is either firing on 1 at TDC or its firing on its other piston. Just put the screw driver down the other cylinders and find the other piston thats at TDC. Put the distributor back in so that the rotor button lines up roughly with the post on the cap that lines up with one. Put the cap back on and try and start it. If it almost starts just trim up the cap a little (twist it by a few degree either way) If it sounds way out then pull the distributor back out and line it up with its mate piston.

take #1 spark plug out turn the engine untill the piston comes up to to dead center TDC on the compression stroke Take the distrib out and put it back in pointing directly at #1 plug wire on the cap

Messed up and took head off without putting #1 piston at TDC


Hi there.... I'm assuming you have the head back on. the easiest way is to try and line up the timing marks an the pulleys and install the timing belt. If you have done this and the timing marks line up as they should, you can take the sparkplug out of the #1 cylinder and manually turn the engine over till you can feel air pressure coming out of the plug hole. continue turning the engine till you can't feel anymore pressure. Don't go too far cause then you'll be on the intake stroke and you'll have to turn the engine the opposite way. with the #1 cylinder at TDC, take you distirbutor and cap and figure out what position the rotor should be at for #1 plug. Mark the distributor somewhere where that position is ( where the #1post on the cap should be). Finally insert the distributor and try to get the rotor as close to that position as possible. remember when you install the distributor, The rotor position will move due to the gear set up. Once you have the distributor istalled, you can adjust the distributor for timing by turning it. Hope this helps you out. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask..
