I thought it was a battery problem at first, but it checked out okay.

The mileage is 81144... the engine light does not come on when this happens and I don't hear any sputtering.

70,000 mi, when car sits for at least 2 hrs is starts fine with no accelerator help, when starting inside about 2 hrs it starts and then shuts down, if I just hit the accelerator momentarily it will stay running

I had the same problem. check the mass airflow sensor. it may be blocked with leaves and debris, or may need to be replaced. mine was blocked with leaves, i had to try to start it several times, but after i drove it a little then tried again. it starts everytime.

A couple of things come to mind. First, its possible the IAC motor (Idle Air Control) may not be working properly. The IAC opens and closes according to signals from the computer in order to maintain idle because the throttle body plate is closed. When you press down on the gas pedal some, that opens up the throttle body plate allowing air to flow in. If the IAC is not working properly it could choke off the air the engine needs to idle correctly.

Another possibility is that the MAF sensor is not working properly. A not so fool proof way to determine if this is the case is to just disconnect the MAF sensor connector and try and start the car again. If the engine idles like it should, its possible the MAF is bad. Reconnect it and if the problem comes back, its a fair bet the MAF is not working properly.

There is also an online community for the Grand Prix that you can visit by going to, sign up and post up your problem there and see if anyone there has some ideas as well.

I have a 2004 grand prix, When you are driving down the highway, and you take foot off gas, there is vibration

Hi Cheyenne:
- For the vibration, I'd be checking universal joints or CV jounts.
- Sounds like you've got your brakes figured out already. Time for some maintenance.

Car shuts off after starting it. chugs while driving. sometimes will shut off after starting and placing in gear. What is causing this to happen?

Mine did the same thing, I have a 2001 Grand Prix Gt and it just started doing that and to keep it running when I start it, I have to hold the gas pedal down, and it is not shifting right, I took it in today and they told me it was my transmission and they could either put a new one in it or rebuild it. To rebiuld it is about $1700 and to put a new transmission in it is about $2800.

Change oil soon light. how to get it to shut off

Answer The "change oil" light on a 2001 Grand Prix is reset by pressing the gas pedal three times while the vehicle is in "accessory" mode:

1. Turn the car off.
2. Place the ignition key in the "on" position, without starting the car. That is, turn the key forward to the place right before it fires the engine.
3. Place your foot on the gas pedal and press it all the way down three times, waiting approximately one second between presses.

If done correctly, the "change oil" light will flash repeatedly, and will then reset.

Please note that it is rare to do this successfully on the first try; if it does not work, turn the car off and try the procedure again, varying the wait slightly between pedal presses at each attempt
