Question about 1990 Cadillac Deville

E49 code on cadillac deville 1990

The e49 code does exist. the car that I have is a cadillac deville 1990. 4.5 liter engine. I know it exist because i looked it up and it says it is a "AIR management system error" What my car does is as follows.

1st problem- when the car cranks up it takes about two or three time. maybe the starter is going out. I dont even know if this is relevent to the problem but im going to give you as much detail as possible.
2nd problem- when the car is first started the idle is very high at first for about 4 to 5 seconds and then goes down to high idle. not as high as when you first start the car but still high. I also noticed that when i put it in neutral the idle goes to normal. but when back in drive, goes back to high again.
3rd problem-in between 2 and 3rd gear i think. The gears stall just a little bit and then jump to the next gear.stall is maybe 1 to 0.5 seconds maybe less.
4th problem- the car seems kinda loud, im used to the noise now, but im sure cadillacs are not supposed to sound that loud. sounds like a diesle engine only lighter. and more like cracks instead of engine noise.
5th problem- when i turn the heater or AC on, the engine light turns on and the engine begins to idle high, so high that its hard to stop the car at stop lights without putting it on neutral.
6th problem- this problem is already fixed but maybe has something to do with it. The battery was dying every night, the car would run throughout the day but then in the morning would be dead. if you played with the battery cables the right way, the car would turn on. so we thought it would be the cables but we disconnected the stereo and exchanged the battery twice and the battery seems to be working just fine.
7th problem- the turn signal lights went out and we had the whole steering wheel replaced and the horn doesnt work anymore and when you turn, it makes a clanking noise, kinda like if it was loose. I dont have a problem with this but just adding it in.

Thank you in advanced.
Dante.

Dante,

(Quote) I looked up code E49 and there is no such code.

The above quote is from my colleague named “txkjun”. With all due respect to him and his “Guru” status he is wrong. The code “E49” does exist, and it is an “AIR management system error".

At this time I would like to apologize for typing a word that didn’t belong in my response.

You see, when I said the code “E-49” “DOES NOT” exist I was responding to the answer that: “Txkjun” gave you.

I meant to say that the code “DOES” exist, but I simply typed in the word “NOT” by accident.

I'll get back to you with repair procedures in a few hours.

Thank You.
Peter.

    Dante,

The first thing to do is to go to a well stocked library and take out the “Chiltons” and “Haynes” auto repair manuals for your car. You’re doing this so you can familiarize yourself with your cars “AIR” Management System. Spend some time reading and learning about the system. The more you know about the “AIR” system the easier it will be to clear the “E-49” error that is set. If you’re going to invest in an online repair subscription, DON’T GET ALLDATA!!!! Get “Mitchell On Demand”. It’s far more professional than Alldata.

When addressing “E-49” the first thing you want to look at is the age of the vehicle. Since you car is 19 years old the setting of “E-49” could be nothing more than a build-up of “Top Cylinder Valve Carbon” or “VACUUM LEAKS.

First make sure there are no vacuum leaks.

Next confirm an operational “EGR” valve. If the "EGR" is not working try cleaning it then re-test it. If the cleaning doesn’t restore the valve to operational status then change it. But “DON’T” change it till you clean the “EGR” passage ways as well. What good is a clean functioning “EGR” valve if the passage ways it connects to are all clogged up with carbon?

Next COMPLETELY dissemble the “THROTTLE BODY” and clean it in a parts cleaner using only “Carburetor Cleaner”.

“Sea Foam” is a “Top Cylinder Valve” cleaner that is sold in the chemical or additive section of auto parts stores. Click on the link below to see how to use properly and effectively.

YOU JUST DON’T POUR IT IN!!!!

Go to http://alldatadiy.com/ and buy a subscription for your vehicle. If you want to repair it yourself you will need this data. It is good for 1 year and has, testing and inspection guides, component locations, wiring digrams and a lot of info the DIY'er needs.  I am looking in all my code manuals and still do not see an e49. AIR is a system that puts fresh air into your exhaust so the emissions at the tailpipe are lower. It's an EPA mandated system. If you have to pass an emissions test in your state or county you will have to get them system woking properly. Check out alldata it is worth the 30.00.

The location of the starter is as per the car engine. If its 4.5 liter then starter is located on front bottom of the engine. And if its 4.6 liter engine then starter is located under the intake manifold. Do 1990 cadillac deville cars have a V6 engine?

No; the most common engine for that car is the 4.5L V8.  There were also 5.0L and 5.7L engines available for the Brougham.
