Neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal may be going out. Its a $15 fix. It tells the computer if the clutch is engaged. If it goes out its like trying to start with out pushing in the clutch, wont turn over at all. Hope this helps.

I do believe the FORD is located under ther hood either on the firewall or on L/S wheel housing. Have encountered many , many faulty control modules. There came a time if you came across a Ford product with a no start, you automatically suspected it, and 90% of the time you were right.

I have a 2008 ford ranger xlt 4x4 4.0 . changed the motor and the battery was disconnected . now the truck will not start cause the anti theft is locked what do i do ???

Ensure you have "ALL" the wires connected and a fully charged battery. Then use your remote to turn off the anti theft devises and your truck should start with no problems. You may have to switch the anti theft device from your old engine to your new one or take the vin of the new engine to the dealer and get the code for that engine.

Is it the fuel pump if i always have to push start my 1988 ford ranger? i charged up the battery many times it just turns over and over but fine when i push start it.

Find the starter solenoid. Follow the positive battery cable to the black round solenoid. There should be a small wire attached to it that is red with a think a green tracer. Remove that wire and then try to start. If it starts replace the ignition module.

I have a 2004 ford ranger. It will not start. it does not turn over. The battery is fully charged. All i get is a click when trying to start it.

The solenoid mounted on the starter is shorted out. It can be replaced separetely or it will come on a rebuilt starter as well

Starting solenoid clicks...sometimes starts and sometimes starter just clicks?

Hey there sluggo,

I'll assume the battery is fully charged and get right to the solenoid.

The solenoid is a really HEAVY DUTY switch. A lot of Amps need to pass through it for you starter to turn your engine.

Inside it are two copper contacts that look like the head of a bolt only rounded. The battery is attached to one, the starter to the other. Hovering above them on a spring is a copper clad disk.

When you turn your key (in a perfect world), an electromagnet is activated that yanks the disk towards the contacts. When they connect, the circuit is closed and the starter turns over. OK.

Well, as you can imagine, each time the disk makes contact, there is a bit of sparkage which can erode the copper plate on the disc. The reason it IS a disc is that it rotates a bit each time it connects. This way the contact surface lasts much longer.

After a while though, you do start to hit bad areas. Thats when it's time to replace it.

Again, that is all dependent on the battery being fully charged.

I wanted to explain what was happening rather than just saying 'replace it'

Best regards to you
Mike

I had a problem with my starter solenoid my truck was not starting. i have a 1996 ford ranger i bought a new one the truck started a few times and then it stopped. what is my problem.

You should have your battery tested & make sure that the terminals are cleaned & well protected wth grease once charged fully. Since you crossed/jumped the solenoid & didn't get it to start until jumping the battery (providing extra voltage), that rules out the solenoid and the ignition switch. Sometimes a battery will test full without a load but will not provide the voltage to the solenoid to actually complete the circuit, thus the clicking sound. If the battery is strong, and the starter bad, the solenoid will click solidly once, passing full voltage to the starter that will either turn, hum, or do nothing. good luck

Turn the key like you are trying to start it.
At the SAME time - smack the starter with a small hammer not too too hard..
