There could be dirt or debri inside the valve body but check to be sure the shift solenoid are good and your line pressure is correct or not to high
It was recently overhauled and they went over everything thrice...don't think they'd miss that.
Thanks though.
I'll ask about the line pressure. But would that be the problem only at slow speeds?
if they have thoroughly checked the transmission for faulty parts and have assembled the valve body correctly you may have a tcm problem i have seen transmission techs dissasemble a old dirty transmission hand re-assemble without washing hands or changing to a clean par of gloves get parts dirty or contaminate the valve body with debris, i would assume when you say "they" you are referring to a repair facility. did the vehicle do this before the trans was rebuilt and to answer your question a shift solenoid could be the problem so could the tcm when you are going slow you require less effort(pressure) and more time(smooth) to complete the shift when rapidly excelerating you need more line pressure to make the shift happen faster without a delay that would cause you to loose momentum

run scanner for trouble codes, some auto parts stores will do this for free, change plugs and wires

you can go through the ecm and reconfigure the trans control module, however there could be an underlying reason for you high shift points. it could be that you have a faulty engine speed sensor which sends the signal to the ecm to operate your transmission. my advice would be to check for any loose connections first. also your shift points are set to the power curve of your engine so if your having to throttle it to a higher degree it could be that the performance of your engine is not what it should be. if you can give me some more background on your vehicle i can evalueate it further
Several things could be causing your problem:
Hope you find that this answers your question. Best of luck.

p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles

Ronald Mueller's suggestion sounds logical too...I'll have that checked out too....thanks guys.
Brandon Swanstrom & Ronald Mueller: Both of you may have hit the nail on the head. As far as history is concerned, my car (Alfa Romeo 166 V6 24), was very well maintained, although the transmission was never serviced. And at around 30-40K (Km), every once in a while it would **** into a gear. I won't boar you details, but at around 100K it was serious and the only answer I got was a replacement transmission. Some time during 30K-100K the agent lost the agency. So after a year and a half of trying to work with Alfa in Italy and unkept promises by them, I finally had the transmission overhauled by a ZF service center here. And thats when problems with the jerky transmission started.
Coming back to the fuel line pressure etc., because the car was in the garage for a year and a half (during my battle with Alfa Italy), there was an issue with the fuel line delivery to the cylinders. They installed an aftermarket piping which did leak for a while. However they say they've fixed it, but could that be the problem?
could the fuel line be the problem with the transmission shifting hard into second gear? no i do not believe this i why your car is shifting hard into second gear i want you to contact colin stickland he is a fix ya alfa romeo expert i believe he can assist you better before contacting him think about any and all symtoms and define as clearly as you can
How do I post a message to him?
