my 1997 buick century has a leaky coolant problem on the lower intake manifol gasket which has been discovered by an auto shop. The cost for repairing it is $800, which I can not afford. Is this problem solvable if I ask a private mechnic to do that? They said the cost is only $300.

I have a buick century 2002--I took it to a co-op garage and they told me I have a leak of antifreeze--they said the oil is leaking into the antifreeze. not even spending time to check it out, gave me a figure of 1500$ to 2000$ this sounds like an awful lot of money. i am a woman on my own and know nothing about cars. never had a problem with the car

What are the symptoms of a bad intake gasket on a 1999 buick century?

Coolant leaks,When the intake manifold gasket cracks or blows out, coolant will leak out of the intake manifold. You may see puddles underneath your car or notice smoke or steam coming off of the engine and exhaust from the coolant dripping onto it and then burning.Overheating, If the intake manifold gasket fails and allows coolant to leak out into the engine, your car will begin to overheat. If your car frequently runs low on coolant or begins to overheat, check the intake manifold gasket.Running poorly, When the intake manifold gasket falters, it affects the way the motor handles its emission gases. The change in pressure can affect the vacuum in the intake as well as how smoothly your car runs. Mainly, it will idle roughly and may hesitate, cough or sputter.

Slight coolant leak under car, passenger side. No leaks in engine compartment.

If it's water that's normal what you are seeing is condensate draining from the evaporator coil. Remember the cooler the air the less water it can hold so it needs to be drained

Upper radiator hose keeps leaking coolant, replaced the cuff ring but still seems to leak after a few days from the cuffed end of the hose. Does it need a new hose?

if it is leaking where it connects to the radiator it might be the radiator itself. take it to a shop and they can pressure test. some shops won't even charge for test.

I have a 2002 Buick Century 3.1 l engine that comes back with a P0446 code. does anybody know what this means and what the cure is ?

That is an EVAP code (gasoline vapors from the tank)
Make sure the gas cap is on ,could just be a line or hose leaking (not gas just vapor).Careful inspection of the vapor lines may find it.
There is a small green cap on a black plastic line under the hood, should be somewhere near the front valve cover ,top of intake manifold. If you blow smoke into the testport you may be able to find it that way.

if the sensor was changed, the wiring to the sensor has to have a break in it somewhere. check for power and ground at your connector, and start tracing back to find the break. good luck!

I have a 2002 Buick Century and soon after I start it white smoke comes out of the exhuast pipe. I don't believe coolant is getting in to the oil, so I was just wondering if I can keep driving the car...

If the white smoke comes out for 15 to 30 seconds your engine is ok. Condensation does build up inside the engine and as well as the exhaust and will burn out in that amount of time. If the white smoke is continuely extracted from the exhaust pipe you do have coolant leaking through the head gasket

Can a bad intake plenum leak antifreeze into the engine on a 2002 century 3.1?The computer code was misfire #1 cylinder. Complete tune-up done, same problem, new#1 injector, same problem. Now the coolant...

I see a lot of lower intake gasket leaks on these but usually you get an external leak or you'll find coolant mixed with the oil, not a misfire. Upper plenum is dry on the 3.1 and just bolts onto the top of the lower intake. We usually apply pressure to the cooling system overnight with the spark plug removed from the misfiring cylinder. If there is coolant in the cylinder come morning then you only have to figure out where it is coming from. If the plenum is removed during the test you might be able to see where the coolant is or isn't coming from with a borescope by looking down the intake runner.
