Question about 1994 Chevrolet Lumina APV

Trans problems 1994 chev lumina, when I shift the car into gear, it will not engage, I have to keep moving the shifter back and forth until it finnally starts to move, the fluid is full, the shifter linkage is moving properly, and there is not just a delay, it sometimes takes many trys to get in gear, and other times just goes rite in, transmision works great and shifts properly as long as it engages, is there something internally just under the pivot arm on top of the trans that has become worn or stripped, and not shifting it properly, like I said if it does engage, I can drive the car around all day with no problems, but if I put it back in park, I might not get it moving again, thanks Ryan

I can shift into drive but it won't engage

sounds like a broken shift cable. (the connection between the shifter and the gearbox) common symptoms are the shifter move easier than normal.and does not move to any gears (not even park or neutral).

Broken shifter linkage is where i would start. Its a cable that runs from your shifter to the trans. To put it in gear.

one thing ive warned my friends to never do and that is to never have your trans flushed cause you may have new fluids but what about the trans filter its old and iots there for that reason to keep dirt and metal; shavings from the bands so try having your oil and filter in the transmission replaced , pull your trans dip stick and on a white piece of paper put a drop of trans oil that you have in your trans at that very moment it should be redish pink but if its brown and smells really bad then the problem is in the oil and filter . change it before u have to replace the whole trans

Shifter won't shift gears

Have someone look @ linkage on trans. while someone moves shift lever thru the gears. If lever @ trans doesn't move then its in the linkage between the column and trans. (possible clip or pin broken @ linkage jounts). If lever @ trans moves then its a trans. internal prob.

1994 chev lumina, trans problems

If there is a delay(like 2-3 secs) when you shift from neutral to drive...then down to reverse...most likely the transmission is screwed,or on its way out.
Is the Fluid level correct?,and is the fluid red or dark and smelly ?.

Dark and smelly IS NOT A GOOD SIGN.--means the fluid has been overheating ...
