You can swap a AOD trans in but is not a heavy duty unit. The E40D is but all electronc and would be expensive.

Which transmissions interchange with the 97 Dakota 3.9 automatics ?

Your transmission is the 42RE, formerly A500SE, and A904 way before that. Due to the electronics involved, you would need the computer and associated harness for a manual Dakota if you were thinking about using a non-electronic automatic.

Transmission overdrive light started flashing and tranny shifted hard When I turned truck off NAND turned back on everything was normal

I have the same problem in my 1994 Ford f350. I replaced the ABS sensor, but it is still shifting hard and the overdrive light still flashes until I shut the truck off. Any ideas?

When driving down the road in overdrive the van will downshift automatically and not shift back into overdrive on its own. Is there a sensor to check?

only internal transmission parts and solonoids that your average joe should never attempt to pull apart. ive been a mechanic for 10 years, and i wont go near an automatic transmission! they are evil! it might just need a fluid and filter change, and it might need a rebuild...only a transmission shop can diagnose those problems, and those are the only places i would even let near my transmission! todays trans. are all electronically controlled via an ECM (engine control module) which can also be having problems. it's impossible to diagnose correctly without looking inside the transmission, so id take it to the closest tranny shop and have them take a look. hope this helps.

What you have is an E4OD transmission and will work with all Ford small block engines (300, 302, 351) in F150,F250, F350 and full size Broncos from 1983-1993.

If you have an automatic transmission on your truck, i would be guessing that the clutch pack for the overdrive is worn out, as in an automatic tranny, you usually have 2 seprate sets of clutch packs, one for the normal drive gears and one for the overdrive gears. Although getting a tranny opened up for any reason will be pretty costly if you have a mechanic do it for you, and if you are not already trained to tweak inside an automatic tranny, i suggest you do not do it yourself, as it is very complicated and delicate. So before you spend a wad of money, always start with checking the transmission fluid level in the tranny, as missing some oil in there will sometimes cause pretty weird and unexpected results. So if the levels are good and everything that has to do with to oil is OK, as I said, probably the overdrive clutch pack that needs to be replaced, and hoping it is not the solenoid bodies that are defective, cause if that is the case, then it will cost about as much to repair the tranny then to buy a new one.
