Question about 1989 Isuzu Trooper

1989 1suzu trooper, Autolocking hubs, want to install manual.....

I recently purchased a 1989 isuzu trooper from a friend at work, He told me the four wheel drive didn't work so I tried it out. He's right, I put it in 4 Hi and at about 20 mph. it made a terrible vibrating noise. I pulled the covers off the autolocking hubs to inspect them because the sound had been coming from the front passenger side. Most of the guts are missing and the transaxle is just slopping around in what's left of the hub. The splines on the axle are toast! So I need a new set of hubs and at least one new axle. My question is, Can I install a set of manual hubs and eliminate the autolockers altogether? Will I have to buy new axles for both sides to accomodate the manual hubs? I prefer the manual hubs and If I could chang over to manuals I would feel better knowing that they are engaged or disengaged.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks......

Manual hubs are worth getting. I have found them on a few LS models at junk yards. CV axles are the same for auto or manual. A dab of mid-strength threadlock is vital to keeping the handful of 8mm bolts tight. Patients is key for this job & a set of clip removers.
When you change your CV axle there are four bolts that remove the ball joint bracket. It is a fairly simple job once you do it a few times. I refuse to invest in a boot crimper (I REALLY need to get one)for the CV boot clamps and always pay the price because if you get the difficult boot rings they are a hassle. Mike W

The best solution for you would be to visit your library and see if they have a Haynes or Chilton manual that fits your particular vehicle specifications. Or you could visit your friendly Auto parts store and purchase one of the manuals, or go on line and do the same. It would have all of the torque specifications for your vehicle.

My 4 wheel drive quit working in my isuzu trooper i can see the front drive shaft turning but the front tires are not spinning


do you have auto locking hubs? if so save yourself the hassles i did not and buy a decent set of manual hubs.my 1989 4 wheel just gave up one day..no wear on axles..front drive shaft spinning but no action..i replace auto locking hubs and re assembled to no avail...no answers why either...have pulled it all apart and put back together many times and no change,only to be told to put manuals in and live happily ever after!!done ....and done!

1989 isuzu trooper right front wheel clicking and does not engage in 4 wheel drive (when all four wheels are in the air)


Check the automatic locking hub on the right side. BEWARE: You MUST have the appropriate special service tools for this job!!!!!

The vehicle will not engage in 4WD operation when the vehicle is off the ground, as the automatic locking front hubs require front wheel load to engage. When the hubs DO lock, it is normal to hear 2 to 3 soft clicks. Anything after that indicates a problem.

If memory serves, there is a cam bushing behind the plate that will wear out, and if the plate is worn out, the hub clicks and will not engage.

The autolocking hubs are vacuum operated.. Check the small hoses at the back of the hubs for cracks or a broken off fitting.

Just have your auto - locking hub cleaned and use your 4wd more often, it get stock usually for non usage. dont use grease after cleaning, use oil or thick silicone oil.

Problems with my auto hubs on isuzu trooper f reg


I replaced the autohubs on my 90 trooper with a set from Warn. $180 and 2 hours. You might want to check the U-joints on the output shaft for the Front Diff. they can make lots of noise when they go bad.
